Much as I love Kelly, would anyone give him a chance against Joe?

    None whatsoever.

I'd be very confident in that pick...in fact I wouldn't be surprised to see Calzaghe stop him.

No. Pavlik-Kessler could be fun, though I don't see Pavlik winning that one either

Calzaghe said he is moving up to light heavyweight, no more super middleweight fights, and I don't think Kelly will move up and fight him at light heavy.
Evidently the fight is going to be Calzaghe vs. Hopkins now.

True. But hypothetically...if they were to meet at 168lbs...Joe would destroy him.

I think Joe is all wrong for Pavlik. Joe is faster, has great stamina and is very hard to hurt, even when he doesn't see the shot coming. I think that Pavlik, pretty much like Kessler, need to be able to buzz his opponent and make him tentative to win his fights, I don't think he'll be able to do so against Calzaghe. Calzaghe UD.

It woud be a totally different fight. Pavlik fights very differently than Kessler. Pavlik needs a bit of distance to get his shots off and that would be a problem for him against Joe. I wouldn't totally discount Pavlik though. The problem is that Taylor is not an opponent by which to judge a fight against Calzighe, Calzighe being light years better.

Joe has said many times he was moving up to 175. Ill believe it when he weighs in at 175 then the first bell rings.

I don't see Pavlik as an easy fight for anyone in or around his weight class.

If they were the same size...sure.

But back to the topic, Calzaghe would beat Pavlik handily. Pavlik is slower than Kessler, more predictable, more hittable and I don't think his chin is as good.

Pavlik is a very aggressive fighter that can throw bombs with both hands. He wouldn't sit on the outside trying to land pinpoint shots.

    It's a different fight entirely.

Agreed. It would be a better fight actually, but because of the reasons why it would be a better fight...it wouldn't last as long.

Calzaghe would not stop Pavlik. :nono:

If he wins it's on points.

Pavlik is NOT more predictable than Kessler sly, you're completely wrong about that one.

Pavlik varies pace, punch selection, and speed/power of his punches VERY well. He is NOT predictable.

Kessler is. As sound and technical as Kessler is, he's like a boxing robot, very predictable which Calzaghe picked up on before the fight.

Pavlik looks sloppier than Kessler for sure, but he is actually a better thinking fighter with a bigger arsenal of punches and better timing and accuracy.

    :bears: Agreed...

...but I would still pick Joe to win handily. He's just too quick and versatile, and even when he does get hit (4th round last night, for example), he seems capable of walking on through regardless. Calzaghe really is one tough SOB.

You can't pick Kelly to win this one (though I do like KP, as it goes)

I consider that high praise coming from you, Mr. Cynical. Especially in the wake of this Saturday.

Nice job on the pick, Rabid (and MWS).

    Peace.

Agree Pavlik is not as predictable as Kessler; by virtue of having a much higher workrate (for starters) and his more unorthodox, pressure-fighter approach.

Not sure on the timing/accuracy - I think Kessler takes him there.

Kessler's got an underrated repertoire and I think some of that showed on Saturday night.

The big difference here is workrate - Pavlik throws many more punches and that leads to a more varied approach and more fluidity.

But make no mistake, Kelly loves that right hand and the 1-2 as well, interestingly enough.

Pavlik does vary pace very well (better than Kessler) and can dial it up a gear or three when needed.

THat is the difference here and what people are underestimating...just how much Pavlik is willing to trade, pressure and come forward.

Pavlik's size and reach are formidable as is his stamina and sheer relentlessness.

There were spurts vs. Kessler when Calzaghe, despite his absolutey masterful performance, seemed winded and a bit rocked....especially the 11th and 12th.

Pavlik could make that be a much bigger issue.

Also, Kelly likes extension on his punches - but he can punch short and would fight in the pocket extremely well....and hit HARD EVERY SINGLE time.

He'd be more comfortable at 168 and he is one strong mofo.

This would not be an easy fight for Calzaghe.

    Peace.
