Exactly. Hell, Eaner and I mentioned it at the end of the Marquez-Juarez fight how an evening of potential conflict actually turned out to be the perfect storm. Here's how it played out for us: - Last non-televised undercard bout was irrelevant and dull enough to where we could instead focus on more pressing matters - find a working stream that carried the Calzaghe-Kessler fight. We did, and watched the fight in its entirety while at ringside for a Showtime card. - Watched the fight, the scores and scores announced, confirming Joe as the winner. By that time, Guerrero and Honorio proceeded to center ring for final pre-fight instructions. - Guerrero knocks him out, interviewed, we get fed quotes at ringside. - After that was over, caught the stream for Countdown to Cotto-Mosley. - By the time that ended, the Marquez-Juarez fight was ready to start. The sequence of events couldn't have been timed more perfect. Caught all of that, with the only thing missed being Calzaghe-Kessler post-fight comments.
Agreed. And it was a beautiful straight left hand...absolutely perfect. A 1st round KO of a guy who handed Luevano his only loss. Peace.
I know that...did you read my post? I didn't pick up the HBO post-fight stuff until later. I went from live match to live match.
Those aren't personal "issues" or family problems. I was referring to something like that, that is maxboxing kind of stuff, not my stuff. The human element most always can be included to some degree, but I am just not into the kind of stuff that Jake described in his post. I hope it works out for the kid, and that is my final word on this matter.
Exactly. This is pretty much how it unfolded for me as well. I skipped the filler on both cards. I'll do you one better... I didn't get home until 9:25 and when I walked in the door, Calzaghe and Kessler were already in the ring. I missed the pre-fight profiles as well. Everything was timed well. Guerrero did us a favor. The first round KO assured a Showtime card of under two hours which is rare seeing that most of their cards are 3 hour events due to the shameess plugs for their shows and the extreme fighting crap.
This is as hypocritical as it gets. What's more important... Giving credit to a guy whose wife is fighting for his life or talking up a kid you feeling personally involved with despite not being related to or receiving any money from. Wait...don't answer that. It is a shame that Guerrero didn't get a little more notice for not only an exciting result, but under the circumstances he fought under. It's nice to see a guy perform under duress like that. In my eyes, that says a ton about who he is as a person and a fighter. He should be commended, not haphazardly thrown by the wayside because there isn't a personal interest in the guy.
Yeah, I'll have to check this dude out. I keep hearing his name all over the place. I thought this kid was all hype but he's starting to pan out. Don't make me whip out my Guerrero-Dunne sparring videos again ::
I have to agree...no disrespect to Karl or Juan Diaz. If any story was worth covering...it was Guerrero. Peace.
he was not thrown by the wayside. I wasn't sure who had seen the Guerrero fight and when I switched to Showtime it was over and I missed the info. We still covered a lot of ground on this one and you can't please everyone. Cupey
I'm working on show structure this week. If everyone agrees, the show will be a lot tighter in the coming weeks.
Wouldn't it make sense to have a set time each Sunday to have the call and provide some kind of an agenda ahead of time. If someone isn't available, that would provide a chance to fill in that spot. I mean really, how difficult is it to organize that? You already know what big fights are coming up and I'm assuming you're watching fights the previous night. "Like I said before" You could have a much tighter show if you did this. Just a few thoughts...
I could've sworn I posted something similar before, but it could be the shotness. anyway... agREED on that, and glad to see that Andrew (steve_dave) will be working on the show's structure, because structure (and for the past two shows, personality) is precisely what the show is missing. It's fun to wing it every so often, but for a topic, not an entire show. One other bit of advice to Cupey: If you don't want to do the research yourself, then perhaps assign a task to each of the other 3 or 4 co-hosts, seeking out the most relevant and pertinent info to a particular topic. For example, discussing Pac-JMM II in a purely mythical matchup sense is nothing more than an audio version of a message board thread. Adding that Arum and Schafer are working feverishly to finalize terms, and that March 15 is being reserved as an HBO PPV date, gives listeners information they perhaps weren't already aware of prior to the show. Asking how Miranda's arrival at 168 lb will impact the division, again, only relevant for those who care about Miranda. Mentioning the fact that his conqueror, Kelly Pavlik, will be fighting Jermain Taylor next February at SMW (or 2 lb. shy), as announced earlier in the week - again, for fans who missed it, they leave the show with a little something, besides other fans' opinions. Furthermore, the topic contradicts Karl's earlier claim of only being concerned about what goes on in the ring, since nobody actually watched Miranda's fight against Henry PoorAss. Four or five guys "just" giving their opinions on particular subjects detracts from whatever identity you're hoping to create for the show. That's why posters keep making mention of mixing it up if that is all the show is going to be about.
Jake...you're not shot (in this case only) because we've both said this in the past. I figure if we repeat it enough, Cupey will eventually pick up the ball and get it rolling. Afterall, it can only help the show.
I forgot to add... The second portion of your post is dead on & is great advice. Without some sort of structure, guys sitting around shooting the shit is basically Fightbeat's version of "The View."
Even if it is just a audio version of the forum, I've said it before but Karl is very entertaining in small doses, there's too much of him in recent shows however...and Cupey needs to moderate the discussion just a bit better, cut the guy who waffles or digresses too much.
