Recognized light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins, in a recent interview with BoxingScene.com's Jose Aguirre, said that he was very impressed with Miguel Cotto's recent decision win over his Golden Boy Promotions partner, Shane Mosley.

Hopkins feels that Cotto (31-0, 25KOs) is the strongest fighter at welterweight and would give Floyd Mayweather Jr. (38-0, 24KOs) nightmares if they met in the ring.

"I think [Miguel] Cotto is the strongest 147-pounder on the planet right now. I don't even know who else [is]. Floyd will have nightmares with Cotto. Mayweather that is will have nightmares with Cotto," Hopkins said. "Based on Floyd not being a big puncher, Cotto will continue to be able to sacrifice or risk more to continue to come to him."

Mayweather returns to the ring against Ricky Hatton on Dec. 8 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

No Doubt, Cotto has the RIGHT MIX of AGGRESSION & SKILLS to Give Mayweather Problems...Cotto's NOT Gonna just Recklessly Engage Floyd...

& like Bernard Pointed Out, the Fact that Floyd ISN'T a Puncher Works to Cotto's ADVANTAGE...If the Need Ever Arises for Cotto to Go for BROKE, he'll B LESS Hesistant to Do this vs. Floyd than he Would B Against Other Fighters...

    "However"

Floyd will have a DECISIVE Edge in SPEED of Hand & Foot...Sure, Cotto Overcame those SAME Advantages vs. Zab, but Floyd has Speed AND INTELLECT, Something Zab SORELY Lacks...

Cotto's Handspeed is UNDERRATED, but when it Comes to Footwork, he's Mostly a Flat-Footed PLODDER...Floyd'll Give him Fits w/Movement & Angles...

The problem is, Cotto's hands are heavy enough that he'll cause Floyd to slow down over the course of the fight.

On the flipside, Floyd would have to fight a Corrales-type fight. He can't afford to stand in looking to slip and roll shots. Cotto's hands are heavy enough that shots to the arms and shoulders could break Floyd down a bit.

Seeing that Cotto's a bodypuncher by nature, he wouldn't succumb to the typical lure of headhunting against Floyd. That's why Castillo had so much success against Floyd the first time out. Cotto's physically stronger than Castillo and possibly better skilled.

I'd give Cotto a decent shot at beating Floyd, but I wouldn't pick him to do so just yet.

only way this fight can't happen is if somehow Margarito gets his shot at Cotto, in which case PBF will thank his lucky stars and go back to fighting Baldomirs and other non-threats.

Cotto might be better, but I'd say both Cintron and Margarito are stronger and hit harder than Cotto at 147.

I think in a 15 round fight Cotto would win, but not in a 12 rounder leading with his head going fowards. Floyd takes rounds as he plants leather, like Mosley did with that one over Cotto's glove. And Cotto needs enough time to wear Floyd down.

Cotto wouldn't fall for any of the feints Corrales did, nor would he adandon his jab, nor would he be a weigfht drained skeleton.

    PBF's Corrales-type fight is a non-starter against a Cotto.

Williams he barely lost to - and my guess is, a whole lot of good fighters will be losing to Williams in the near future.

as far as the Santos fight, it's B.S. he was on his way to winning that fight and everyone knows it until the fight got stopped.

there's a brand of fighter out there that absolutely terrifies PBF - I gurantee it. this brand of fighter includes the likes of:

    Cotto
    Margarito
    Williams

guys who throw tons of punches, don't mind getting hit, are durable and can go 12 rounds on full throttle. PBF don't have what it takes to beat those guys.

    btw:

hatton doesn't qualify since he's a clinching huggernaut who's about as afraid of the incoming as gainer is - he just deals with it not by running but by bear-hugging.

i doubt that. although i will say Margarito taking on Golden Johnson on a PPV undercard fight was a disgrace and he should be ashamed of himself for doing so. especially considering the inappropriate level of celebration he exhibited following the victory as if he'd accomplished anything noteworthy or somehow redeemed himself.

but getting back to the Williams fight, Margarito was in that fight from start to finish and won most of the later rounds. I'd give him a great shot to win a rematch.

PBF, on the other hand, I see losing miserably to Williams.

Except for Paul Williams, I think Cotto may have the best style to beat Mayweather out of all the fighters from 140-154.

He's shown in several fights now that he's good at cutting off the ring and matching speed and skill with fast/skilled boxers (two things DeLaHoya was NEVER really good at), and he has a great jab, which Mayweather's fight with DeLaHoya showed he is sometimes vulnerable to. At the same time, Mayweather doesn't seem to have the power/strength that Mosley or even Judah had to threaten Cotto's chin or put real pressure on him.

Right now, if the two ever fought, I'd take Cotto by decision.

me too. and good points about Cotto's multiple dimensions. and by the way, I wouldn't rule out a stoppage win for Cotto either.

what do you think of Margarito's chances against PBF?
