Presently round 5 of Jhonny "Not Johnny" Gonzalez-Jose Angel Beranza. Hate to say it, as I've always enjoyed watching him fight, but Jhonny Boy appears to be shot.
Only caught the final three rounds. His jab didn´t look sharp, he didn´t seem to have the usual bounce in his legs, which leads me to believe there is a Pounce de Leon in his near future.
Gonzalez won a unanimous decision, if anyone cares (and apparently, nobody does). 98-91 (2x) and 96-93. Close fight in the first half, Jhonny appeared to pull away in the final four rounds, despite losing a point for a bogus low blow call. Didn't look very impressive overall, but he's back in the win column.
Only saw Gonzalez fight one time and forget against who. Never thought he would be a superstar but he did have boxing skills mixed with some "fire". I thought he was going to go a bit further.
interesting, he actually surpassed my expectations. his fights are usually fun, but had a crash and burn style (especially with no chin). i was surprised he was able to pick up a belt at bantamweight, and even more surprised that he took Israel Vazquez to hell and back when they fought last year.
Now that you point it out i suppose he did achieve a lot. Probably more hope on my part that he would get one level higher i guess.
His fight w/ William Gonzalez was one of my favorites from the "Boxeo de Oro" series. Onto Lopez-David Soribio. And poor Lopez doesn't look any fresher than Jhonny
Well that was terrible. Not much blame on Lopez, though, who came to fight. Toribio fought like a last-minute replacement, tried his damnest early, then fought to survive once he realized he wasn't scoring an upset knockout. Official scores forthcoming (I had Lopez pitching a 10-round shutout)
99-90 across the board. I forgot Lopez lost a point for headbutts somewhere in the middle of the fight. Still a shutout, though, as all three judges saw it the same way I did
Didn't catch these fights unfortunately....but one bad showing does not shotness make. Boxers can have bad nights out occasionally...or they simply don't put that much work in against an average opponent (seems likely given Jhonny came in at 123 1/2 or something). I thought he looked just fine vs. Gerry up until the body shot. Peace.
I thought he did as well. But in the end, he was knocked out. And two knockout losses in less than a year is going to take something out of you mentally. I'll hold out hope for his next fight against a presumably fresher opponent. I just didn't like what I saw overall. As far as you missing the show... you didn't miss much. The main event was terrible, though as I already mentioned, more due to Toribio's unwillingness to make a fighter of it.
where do you live? Sounds like you're catching the West Coast feed, which I always forget it runs on delay. So my bad for the spoilers.
Nah...I saw the result on fightnews already and you named the thread just fine. It's when results get put in the thread title that my ass gets chapped. My telefutura feed is on directv...I think it's New York's telefutura, though. (maybe it used to be and is not anymore?)
That's weird that it starts so late for you. It's usually 8PM ET/10PM PT for those without satellite/digital cable. This is my first time in 4 years (since moving from NY) where I get Telefutura. On DishNetwork they only offer the feed most relevant to your area, so I get the east coast one, which starts 7PM central. In NY, I thought I got East and West Coast feed - the East Coast feed came as part of DirecTV's local channels in NY, the West Coast channel coming wherever the Spanish section of DirecTV channels are located
I am now getting the Fresno feed instead of the NY feed. No way I'll complain since Directv went for so long without any telefutura feed (unless it was one of your local channels which it wasn't for me) and I was stuck picking scraps off of galavision. For anyone who cares...every now and then galavision will show a fight that wasn't aired on telefutura, but was on the undercard of a telefutura show. So, if there is an undercard fight you were hoping to see, it would pay to record galavision's boxeo en esta esquina for a few weeks to see if it shows up.
That's true. We'll see. Hopefully he is not shot yet....I like him and would think he still has alot to offer. D.A. Lopez is one of my "favorite lesser knowns," btw. Peace.
Hmm.. wondering if there was a mixup in our earlier dialogue. My impression from last night was that Gonzalez appears to be on the shot side. Lopez looks like an old 29 (for some reason I thought he was closer to his mid-30's), but not shot. He's not in his prime, either, but seems to still have plenty of fight left in him.
Jake, i think you know i'm a prett fair. I'm not a moderator but i would appreciate if you and Donnybrook would keep your racism out of the GD section. Thanks.
