......the time of the stoppage? They replayed this fight last night on ESPN classics, and the announcers (not HBO but some other guys, probably from ESPN, I dont remember) in the 8th round claims that he has Whitaker up by 4 points. :nono: I know that Hurtado lost a couple of points.......... Btw, Whitaker was knocked down 3 times and one of those wasn't called a KD.
Hurtado was up on the cards. <TABLE align=center><TBODY><TR><TD></TD><TD>1997-01-24</TD><TD class=cs>147</TD><TD>Diosbelys Hurtado</TD><TD class=cs>146</TD><TD class=c>20-0-0</TD><TD align=right><TABLE><TBODY><TR><TD class=w></TD><TD class=w></TD><TD class=w></TD><TD class=w></TD><TD class=w></TD><TD class=w></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD><TD>Convention Center, Atlantic City, New Jersey, United States</TD><TD class=rw>W</TD><TD>TKO</TD><TD align=right>11</TD><TD align=right>12</TD><TD></TD><TD class=right></TD></TR><TR><TD class=left></TD><TD class=cs colSpan=13>~ time: 1:52 | referee: Arthur Mercante Jr. | judge: John Stewart 92-93 | judge: Lazaro Carrasco 92-94 | judge: Sergio Silvi 91-96 ~ ~ WBC welterweight title ~ </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
I haven't seen it in a long time but my recollection is that Hurtado was up due to the knockdowns. Larry Merchant went batshit during that fight and hated everything Hurtado did. He called him an amatuer.
word... I had Hurtado up by 3 (94-91) going into the 11th round, but could also easily see John Stewart's score (93-92) being correct. The one thing I do remember at the end pf that fight was believing that someone would ultimately die on Mercante Jr's watch. I didn't think it would come 4 1/2 years later, though. But that stoppage in the fight was VERY VERY late. I can respect giving a man a chance to fight back, but when you're stretched THROUGH the ropes and still taking clean punches without reaction - usually a good sign that your KTFO.
True - but Whitaker was actually a media darling back then, especially on the East Coast. What shocked me was that so many in the media loved Pernell but hated Roy.
Mercante Jr. was awful in this fight. I mean at least in other fights like Mercer-Morrison (Perez) and Ruddock-Dokes (Mercante Jr) in other dangerous beatings on the ropes, it happened very fast. Whitaker had enough time to totally load up his left hand, it wasn't like he was throwing a quick fluid combo. Hurtado was gone and Pea was cocking his left hand back and bombing him, and Mercante Jr. was just standing there watching.
I've always thought that is one of the worst late stoppages I've seen....I have never understood what Mercante Jr. was waiting for. I had Hurtado up by 3 as well. Peace.
Great fight, I didn't score it, but Whitaker looked to be behind. Ike Quartey would have SMOKED Pernell at that time, and Whitaker and Duva knew it as well.
To answer the question in the thread title, Hurtado was winning. It wasn't even close.(in terms of rounds) Pernell closed the show.
Quartey was not that good, sir. I dooubt he could find PW in there with his punches. ________ 250 GT DROGO
Pea was definitely on the slide in that fight....and Hurtado was awkward, tall and rangy, and difficult to look good against anyway. Amazing that Whitaker,...not a known puncher by any means...was able to brutally KO Hurtado to escape an upset loss.
I saw the end of this fight and like the OP I was like "what the fuck?" when the announcers said they had whitaker up by 3 or 4 points. Hurtado boxed the shit out of whitaker and I'd be surprised if I had him any less than 4 points ahead after 10. Hurtado wasn't the hardest puncher, but his hands were lightning fast --evidenced by knocking whitaker and tszyu on their asses more than once each.
Yup....I remember how embarrassed Tszyu looked. :: That's what happens when you rush in against someone like Hurtado.
Agreed. Even though he was losing that fight and got beat up by Tito i think those fights cemented his legacy as much as clowning guys he was thousand times more talented than. He showed toughness and courgage that wasn't always apparent.
