Same old stuff from Ward. He's real talented but sloppy. At least he is handling his bums easier now.
Damn, it must've ended quick. I packed up my laptop upstairs, came downstairs, had a drink and set up camp in front of the BR TV... and they were already discussing Vargas-Mayorga. Not really interested in this heavyweight fight, though Joey Abell is generally fun to watch.
Abell is really fun to watch. Showtime should be ashamed. They just wanted to go on vacation to St. Lucia. Did they pay 17 guys to lay down? :dunno:
yeah, this is pretty bad :: I was gonna say the same as you, though... the card is less about the fighters being showcased (though they've been wanting to showcase Ward for well over a year) and more about the location. It's my problem in a nutshell, with what Showtime has become. It's either a random card from a brand new location, or their being all too willing to settle for HBO's table scraps (like next week's PPV or December's tripleheader). I hate it, because the Showtime group is my favorite bunch to work with, within the sport. But they haven't been making it easy in recent months.
This is fightnews's description of the fight. In a battle of unbeaten super middleweights, 2004 U.S. Olympic Gold Medalist Andre Ward (14-0, 9 KOs) outclassed Roger Cantrell (12-1, 8 KOs) and was in the process of breaking down his opponent when Jose Rivera suddenly stopped the fight in round five, much to Cantrell's dismay.
Ward looks far healthier at 168 than 160 (like Allan Green). And like valdosta pointed out, it was nice to see him handle a bum without having any difficulties. I rated ward a little better than dirrell coming out of the olympics, then he starved himself to death and looked pretty shitty giving Dirrell the edge. I guess I'd still give Dirrell the edge because he hits harder. if I was training ward, i'd have him come at every fight like it's going the distance, a la virgil hill. At the higher levels this means he'll get very few ko's, but he's going to be a bitch to outpoint for anyone if he fights that way.
Remember,it's Sho Cox we're talking about here!! What where you thinking, that this was actually gonna be a good fight card??::
