to see if they had the Vargas/Mayorga fight as they have been a mainstay in my community for PPV fights. I know the owner, he told me he wouldn't be doing anymore boxing PPV's. He went on to tell me that his small pub (max capacity of 147 patrons) was charged 3200 hundred bucks to show the last ppv he had which was DLH/Mayweather. He said it just isn't worth it to him unless he charges at the door, and he doesn't think that would fly to well with his regular crowd. The UFC ppv's only charge him $800 and he packs the joint out. From now on he is only going to do the UFC shows. I am a fan of both, it just drives me nuts what boxing is doing to itself.:flip:

Anyone else had any experiences like this?

Fuck yeah Jarhead!! You can't catch a fight here in San FRancisco anymore unless it is pirated at one of the Mexican bars in the Mission. They totally fucked it up for people and I agree with your sentiments because it drives me nuts as well.

I get all the fights for free because I hate those bastards and decided to get even.... but I can tell you this. I would gladly.... GLADLY pay a twenty spot at the door to rub elbows with fellow boxing fans at a kick ass bar. Sometimes I will catch a fight in the Mission for this reason (I enjoy the Hispanic fans), more often than not though either I or another friend just invite people and we watch it here.

They got greedy and destroyed a venerable tradition and it sucks.

Unfortunately, in New York, it's more like 50 at the door for the bar to hope they break even.

I know they pay by maximum capacity as opposed to how many people show, so if your bar holds 200 people, and 35 show, they're gonna lose a ton of money.

There used to be a Sports Bar near where I lived that I was friends with the manager. So we would go watch the fights, and then the manager would give me a promo poster for the fight since they didn't need them anymore. I used to have a ton of them.

I enjoy watching a fight at a bar, just like I love watching football at a bar. It's a great atmosphere.

You can pay $20 for a PPV on Geary and 4th. I can't remember the name right now...Some Irish Bar.

I also went to Hard Hats in Daly City for the Pac-MAB rematch.

Boxing PPV's have always been expensive for bars. This is nothing new.
I didn't realize that ufc ppv's were so 'reasonable'.
    .
I'm not saying there isn't something to bitch about here, but travel back to the mid-90's, before everyone had access to ppv through a dish or cable and then you'll really find something to bitch about. Things are FAR better today for boxing fans than they were back then.

Stupid question - Why can't bars just call up direct tv or someone and order the ppv like normal? Who regulates the charges etc?

They have different rates for establishments and homes.

Some places will bring in a home box to get around the excessive fees, but they are taking a risk when they do it. A pretty big risk, too. Like around $25,000 fine, as I remember.
