Sorry, I know I've probably left out a big fight or two, but I'm having trouble remember back all the way through the year. :dunno: But I know these are most of the big candidates right now. Also, this list could become meaningless if Mayweather-Hatton turns out to be a barnburner (though that would be against the odds).
I voted for Vazquez-Marquez II but believe Pavlik-Taylor I will get the nod. Bika-Codrington should be on that list, as most people will default to those listed rather than think of it in castin a vote for "Other." Mayorga-Vargas and Cotto-Mosley don't belong in Fight of the Year discussion, unless the discussion is limited to fights featuring West Coast fighters.
I don't even think that the Taylor fight was Pavliks best fight this year. People are getting caught up in name over game. Its the reason why people mention a fight like Hearns-Leonard alongside Corrales-Castillo. Even J-Dawg-Bika was better then Taylor-Pavlik.
The thing about Pavlik-Taylor was its timing. It came after a decent lull (I want to say seven weeks without HBO or Showtime airing a major fight) and it was a great fight. And also, for all of the talk about Floyd-DLH being the one to save boxing ... I actually know a lot of people who point to the Pavlik-Taylor fight as the one the reeled them back in.
I think Marquez-Barrera deserves to be listed along with Calzaghe-Kessler, in terms of the skill level and it was arguably closer and more exciting. Williams-Margarito was better than some of those fights listed, perhaps Diaz-Morales as well.
Nice catch, Mitchell Kane. I'd personally vote for Pavlik-Taylor, I think. There have been many very-good-to-spectacular fights this year.
I hear ya...especially in comparison with a couple listed....but seeing that none of those you mentioned are in any way true candidates for FOTY, not having them there is no crime.
Vasquez-Marquez 2 was probably the best fight. I was more into Pavilk-Taylor though because I'm more of a fan of the two guys involved.
