that's been my argument against Gatti for a while. Vargas gets in ahead of him (though agREED with you that I'm unsure if he gets in at all). Corrales would also deserve to go in before Gatti (and arguably Vargas) in terms of EOY 2021 eligibility, as I'm 99.9% sure Chico's not coming back.

Well I take it from this that you have never been near Oxnard.

Fernando Vargas is a punk. His mind is a maelstrom of human filth and indecency, he showed how despicable and classless he was over and over and over and....well you get the point.

He fought his ass off his entire career, and was a part of several great fights, but that doesn't eradicate him from a lifetime of being a punk.

He's a pussy, a wanna be cholo, who thankfully got the shit beaten out of him by two of the truly great fighters of his era.

I love all that pre-mayorga bullshit he talked, as he always talked about how hard he is. As if mayorga had 10 cents to his name coming up in a dirt shack in nicaragua, compared to a pampered joto from LA.

Vargas is just a dirty fighter, with a shit personality, and an extreme lack of class. How could anyone be a fan?

    Question for you:

Who wins out of the 135lb Castillo and the 154lb Oscar who knocked out Mayorga?

Easy. They ignore all of the out of the ring bullshit and focus mainly on what they get out of watching him fight.

Honestly, though, can't we just leave be a simple appreciation thread? If you DON'T appreciate him, click the BACK button on your Internet browser window and go to the next thread.

haha...that dude looks like Tony Margarito if you ask me.

By the way I never said (without jest) that Floyd would beat Leonard, Hagler, Monzon or Hearns at their best weights.

    Hmmmm....

    HARSH, Venemous Words...

Perhaps U Should Take this Up w/Vargas HIMSELF, as Opposed to Calling a Former World Champion & Lb 4 Lb'der a "Punk" & a "Pussy" from the Safety of your Keyboard???:dunno: ...

Just like U have the Right to HATE Fernando @ your Leisure, REED has EVERY RIGHT to LOVE & ADMIRE his Contributions to the Sport of Boxing...

I think its nieve and juvenile to look the other way when honoring an athlete or someone from any walk of life for that matter. Its the same as people who laud Abraham Lincoln as the great emancipator, look at his debates with Douglas in Illinois, he was himself a racist who talked about the inferiorities of the negroes, but people disregard that or are ignorant of it when they talk. With vargas, its as if the things he did are a non-issue as long as he entertained with his fights. Athletes get special treatment anyway, i dont see how anyone can see vargas and not immediately think of something other than his big fights.

Vargas did some awful things in the ring, like spitting on an opponent, and the way he talked about his "I'm a true mexican" nonsense before the Oscar fight.

For me its just like the Washington/tomjanovich incident in basketball, what i will remember most about Vargas is the classless way he carried himself.

But I guess i may be alone on this. When I think of Carlos Monzon, all i see is a filthy murderer who deserved what he got:dunno:

I honestly feel the same way about Vargas which is why I never cared for him. But who the fuck are we to tell people they CAN'T be fans of his? It's not like anything you say is a mystery to any boxing fan.

People are well aware of who he is, what he's about, and they're still fans. Therefore, it's their thread, and their moment to appreciate. If you hate him that much, start a "Fuck Fernando Vargas" thread. It doesn't take much effort to start up a new topic on a message board.

Vargas doesn't deserve to get in.

If he gets in, then you have to consider guys like Shannon Briggs (Linear and two-time heavyweight champion) and Hasim Rahman (Linear, Undisputed and two-time heavyweight champion.).

Oscar would win because unlike Floyd , Castillo would actually try to fight insttead of clinch , run , and survive ...

Yeah...but my point is...You're basing Floyd losing to vargas because he had a close fight with Castillo...suggesting that Vargas is better and more formidable than Castillo. Well with you same logic...Floyd shouldn't have beaten Oscar.

Sorry, but Ross Thompson SUCKERPUNCHED Vargas @ their Press Conference, PRIOR to their Fight...Thompson's Actions TOOK Vargas to a Level where Fernando SPIT on him...

It's NOT like Vargas Carefully SELECTED an Opponent to Spit On...He Demeaned a Guy who SUCKERPUNCHED him & REED Really has No Problem w/It, Considering...

& if U're REALLY as Familiar w/Oxnard, L.A. & "Cholos" as U Say U R, then SURELY U Know that Vargas Was Faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar from ALONE in CRITICIZING DeLa for NOT Being a "Real Mexican"...

Mexican FANS, MEDIA & FIGHTERS Stood in Line to CRITICIZE DeLa in that Regard...

to go back to what you earlier mentioned, and again, with my using the same argument I make for Gatti not going in, consider who is now retired, and/or who will most likely retire within the next year or two:

Morales, Barrera, Mosley, Corrales, Jones, Hopkins, GLH, Trinidad, Wright, (possibly) Mayweather, Calzaghe, Toney, Virgil Hill, Michalshitzki, Mormeck...

with "only" three per year getting elected and a lot of likely candidates ahead of both, it's not a given that Gatti or Vargas go in. At least not any time soon. And that's not even including the 40 or so other fighters presently on the ballot that have been waiting forever and the list of those who've yet to make their way to a ballot (Benn, Eubank, Julian Jackson, Iran Barkley, etc).

Suckerpunched and trashtalked in a major way.

Agreed on all counts with this post.

I've never cared for Vargas, but the incident that keeps getting brought up has its background/context...and if you appreciate what he did in the ring, so be it.

If we are only going to uphold virtuous, morally perfect, "decent" humble boxers as the only kind to be HOF material or be called "all-time greats"....

We'll be quickly left with just about no one.

    Peace.
