    From Fightnews:

Early indications in the direction of Ricky Hatton's career were revealed by his lawyer Gareth Williams to the London Telegraph. According to Williams, "The Hitman" will likely defend his IBO belt in the UK then face IBF junior welterweight champion Paul Malignaggi at Madison Square Garden later in the year. Williams also stated that Hatton will not face hated rival WBC super lightweight champion Junior Witter. "Ricky will never fight Junior Witter, as long as he keeps attacking him in public," he is quoted as saying.

Now for years I tried to back Hatton and refute the claims of those who said he was ducking Witter. But when I read shit like THIS, it makes me wonder. Attraction might actually be right. Hatton appears to want NO PARTS of Witter. If that isnt the DUMBEST fuckin reason to not wanna somebody. "He's disrespects me in public"   Umm hello.... wouldnt that give a fighter MORE incentive to wanna fight a guy if he's disrespecting you. The want to kick his ass, and shut his mouth! But Hatton obviously doesnt feel this need for Witter.

Fuck it! I'm sick of this shit! Put me on the "Hatton is ducking Witter" bandwagon! Not that I'm complaining about Hatton fighting Paulie, cause Paulie is a good fighter and a threat to outbox Hatton. HOWEVER, he should really fight Witter first! The fight would be HUGE in England, much morseso than Malignaggi-Hatton would be in NYC. Paulie isnt a big attraction, not even in NYC. And Hatton still isnt a house hold name in the states yet, mainstream American fans at this point probably just know him as "that white guy Floyd whupped up on".

On the other hand Witter & Hatton are two biggest names in British boxing not named Calzaghe, AND Witter has a belt!

Man up Ricky! Take your tune-up, then fight WITTER, THEN Paulie! But I wont hold my breath..... its clear at this point Ricky is ducking him.

*Waits for the Hatton groupies to leap to thier man's defense*

the groupies will now say why should hatton give witter the payday? who has witte beaten? why does he deserve a shot a hatton? why should hatton fight him when witter has been disrespecting him? etc.

    any excuse really.

the bottom line is that hatton has always realised that witters style is very very bad for him and he would have a dreadful time with witter. he knows it and anybody who knows anything about boxing knows it. i've followed this saga for years and the ONLY reason this hasn't happened is down 100% to hatton. he says he won't fight witter because of disrespect in public (it's not like witter is acting like ali) but what did hatton do to floyd after the castillo fight? Imagine not even wanting to prove that you are the best in your own country. Hatton always said, "when he gets a belt i'll fight him", but continues the ducking. only a fool would say that hatton hasn't ducked witter. shame on him. I enjoyed watching him get completely outclassed against floyd.

I agree Hatton has some weak ass excuses not to fight Witter.

    He'll fight Urango but won't fight Witter.:dunno:

Regardless of what he thinks of Witter. Clearly Witter is a champion at 140 and one of the best fights to make there. Not to mention has been a rival of his from England.

Every time I read something from Hatton regarding Witter he has a different excuse not to fight him. :dunno:

I thought Witter would beat Hatton a few years ago. Not sure about now. Still, it's the biggest UK fight around, and Hatton needs a big win. Can't understand why he wouldn't do it if he were confident.

    simple semantics

'to duck' means 'to avoid someone because you fear that he will beat you'

this is not the case with hatton, according to the source you quote. according to the source - which you accept - hatton avoids witter because witter has been badmouthing hatton so much in public for so long. hatton doesnt want to financially reward this guy who has been rude to him for so long. so the source doesnt suggest that hatton fears a witter victory.

if you're using a different, wider definition of 'to duck' - e.g. 'to avoid fighting someone' - then fine, hatton is 'ducking' witter. but, on this defintion of 'duck', floyd is ducking me, since he avoids fighting me.

case closed. if you think hatton is ducking witter, fine. but this article doesnt help your argument.

Witter has been bad mouthing Hatton for years! Instead of "not wanting to give him a payday" you'd think that eventually Ricky would just swallow his pride and say "Fuck it! I'll give him a payday at the expense of beating his ass!" But Ricky wont do this, and its gotten to the point where its quite suspect. Ricky has given all the excuses in the book why he wont fight Witter, and they've ALL run out. "He's a nobody". True a couple of years ago, but now everybody knows that Witter is at least a threat. "I'll fight him when he has a belt". He DOES now, and Hatton still dont want any!

Hatton-Witter would be the biggest fight in England between two Brits since Benn-Eubank. I cant understand how Hatton wouldnt wanna cash in on this, and get the chance to shut up the guy who bad mouths him so much.

Further more.... to PROVE that Ricky's excuse is absoloute and utter bullshit.... if Ricky doesnt wanna fight a guy who disrespects him, then why the fuck is he planning to fight Paulie? Malignaggi is on BT every other day nowadays saying that Hatton is GARBAGE, and that he has no respect him as a fighter. Paulie is bad mouthing him right now worse than Witter ever did, yet why is Hatton willing to fight Paulie and not Witter? Answer me that!

I hope it backfires on Hatton. I hope and pray that Paulie boxes the shit outta his hook n hold ass!

*Pops in a tape of Mayweather-Hatton to see that check-hook fuck up Hook n Hold*

judging from how witter fought under the pressure against the C+ level likes of lovemore ndou, colin lyles, and andrea kotelink, i dont see how hatton would be scared to face this guy.

Kotelnik is not a C-level fighter and if Hatton wants his WBA belt back, he´ll have to rob Kotelnik via controversial decision in England like Jr. Shitter. :nono:

I think it´s funny Hatton says he doesn´t want to fight Witter, because he was disrespectful, cause Ricky Hatton has been disrespectful toward Mayweather in a subtle and not so subtle way. That´s what made Floyd reconsider his retirement.

Not exactly sure why this quote from someone not even named Ricky Hatton would put you on the bandwagon? It's been obvious that Hatton doesn't want to fight Witter and has been avoiding him on purpose for "years". It's only been the 'why' that is debatable...and still is.

As far as Hatton not being a household name here...well, you just filled the gap in your "being wrong" column that was left when you acknowledged Hatton is ducking Witter. Of course Hatton is well known in the US. It's just as obvious as the Witter/Hatton thing.

The obvious reason is that Hatton doesn't want Witter to get rich by fighting him. And it's not all that implausible, particularly if he really, really dislikes Witter.

    1. Can you find this definition anywhere?

    2. Nonsense.

I agree that there is semantics going on here, but the people who use your definition are the ones who are out of line in this situation.

Ricky Hatton's Dad has said he'll have 5 more fights, 3 next year and 3 in 2009. But when asked about Junior Witter, he said that was likely but "not right away".
    From BBC website:
Junior Witter, who retained his WBC light-welterweight title with victory over Vivian Harris in Doncaster in September, stated last week that he was determined to take on Hatton. But Hatton's lawyer Gareth Williams has indicated that 'personal reasons' were the biggest problem with regard to a possible showdown.
"Ricky feels Junior has been trying to piggy-back on his success and that he's never given him the respect he deserves," said Williams. "Ricky resents the thought of giving Witter his biggest pay-day. Ricky took thousands of fans to see him fight in Las Vegas while Junior Witter had his last fight in front of two men and a dog in a phone box in Doncaster. They're just not in the same league."
As champion, Witter would normally expect the biggest cut but his promoter Mick Hennessy has indicated he would be happy for Hatton to receive the 'lion's share'. "It's never been about the money with Junior and we could make this fight in a flash," said Hennessy. "All Junior wants is the opportunity to prove that he is the best light-welterweight in the world. If Ricky can continue to bring the same level of profile and support, we won't be greedy and we would be happy for him to take the lion's share of the purse. It would make sense."

Hmmmmm....the last bit I've underlined sounds very much like "Floyd-Mayweather-Jr-isn't-exciting-enough-and-doesn't-draw-the-crowds-like-I-do" that we were all hearing during the last few months.
Oops. Open mouth and insert foot.
IMO, Hatton HAS to fight Witter in one of those fights next year, but I suspect a tune-up followed by Mallignaggi will be on the cards instead.

They're right to avoid Witter....they need to get their math skills in order first so they can calculate the "lion's share."

i like hatton and i think he's a pretty good fighter, but certainly not one of the best i've seen. BUT he's one of the most well managed fighters in recent years.

at this point, it's all business. he can fight two bums in 2008 and finish the year w/ a mega fight against eitehr witter or malignaggi.

why risk easy paydays against witter especially after coming off a knockout loss?

junior has even offered hatton the lions share!!!

Mick Hennessy, the promoter of WBC junior-welterweight king Junior Witter has offered Ricky Hatton the ’Lions Share’ of the purse in the hope of enticing the Manchester ’Hitman’ into the ring.

Hatton, a courageous but ultimately out-gunned loser to WBC welterweight champ Floyd Mayweather jnr two weeks ago, is expected to relaunch his career back down at 140lbs in May, 2008. Even though Witter holds the prestigious WBC crown and would be entitled to a 70% split in a purse bid situation Hennessy fully accepts that Hatton’s tremendous fan base and exciting fighting style make him the star attraction.

"It’s never been about the money with Junior and we could make this fight in a flash,†Hennessy told PA Sport. “All Junior wants is the opportunity to prove that he is the best light(junior)-welterweight in the world. If Ricky can continue to bring the same level of profile and support, we won’t be greedy and we would be happy for him to take the lion’s share of the purse."

Hatton vs Witter, given their bitter rivalry, would be a huge attraction in the UK, and could warrant an outdoor venue in Manchester, especially in May. But whilst Hatton’s father Ray is receptive to a Witter fight ’down the line’ his lawyer Gareth Williams delivered a humorous but valid quote, saying: "Ricky feels Junior has been trying to piggy-back on his success and that he’s never given him the respect he deserves. Ricky resents the thought of giving Witter his biggest pay-day. Ricky took thousands of fans to see him fight in Las Vegas while Junior Witter had his last fight in front of two men and a dog in a phone box in Doncaster."
