  1. ILLUMINATI

    ILLUMINATI Roberto Duran

    Ali knows who his daddy is...it ain't the white man...it wasn't Malcolm X..it wasn't Elijah powder Muhammad...it was JOE LOUIS....I'm the GREATEST...but not when i'm around my daddy...Joe Louis..brown bomber...hero...legend...the truth...

It's not amazing to fight for 30 years when you are a non-factor for the last 10.

It's not unbelievable. He lost. He beat guys who lost.

Jimmy Wilde is probably who I'd go with.
Others worth mentioning would be Foreman, Robinson and Armstrong.
I suppose it mainly depends on what 'amazing' means.

    Jones. Ali's a close second. Robinson's a close third.

    Laila Ali perhaps.

Stylewise Ali-Louis (60s version Ali) would have been a mismatch in Ali's favour. Ever seen Louis-Conn 1? Just imagine that being Ali?:eeeek:

    Jimmy Wilde.

Conceivably one of the very very few flyweights who could crack with much bigger men. His power and strength for such a small man were phenominal.

"He was the most gifted athlete"

    "but not the most gifted"

:dunno: You even have a hard time saying otherwise yourself. People have never seen a fighter like him EVER. What he did in the ring was amazing, in the whole history of the sport.

Lennox even when you're right you're wrong.

What is with this one fight justifies a MM BS u keep propping up.

You pick a world of favorites, then brag about it.

    Try staying objective.

As to Karl, there's no way Joe Louis and his robotic footwork could beat Muhammad Ali, barring some hail mary combination. He isn't fast enough/have the moves to get Ali in a position of trouble.

As to this topic I'd say someone like Roberto Duran or Carlos Monzon.

To me, amazing is someone of Duran's attributes/stature being so highly regarding and beating guys with loads more personal talent. With Monzon its a similar argument, he wasn't faster, stronger, than most guys he beat, but he got the job done.

RJJ/Ali/SRR are guys with absolutely unbelievable talent, and if we're going on who looks the most impressive its RJJ by alot.

But again for me, the most impressive is a guy like Duran, who wasn't faster, stronger, bigger, etc. than anyone he fought, yet he was the best/one of the best over a 10+ year period

I guess I'm not the biggest Duran nuthugger on earth anymore:lol:

Roy's run at 168, as despicable he and his fans are, was amazing

:bears: We know Louis never fought anyone as fast with the size of Ali. We know Louis never faced a chin like Ali's. On the other hand, Ali faced bigger guys than Louis and bigger punchers than Louis.

I'm not sure how this fight would go, but I know Louis wouldn't possibly dominate Ali. That's an extreme stretch.

My first new year's resolution is to look at these hypothetical fights as 15 round trilogies, not as single fights. And here is why: Frazier beat Ali but it took Ali that fight to figure out Frazier so to speak. Louis cut the ring down, and yeah he looked slow doing it at times but there was a reason why he usually caught up to his guy in the 15 rounds he had. Ali would get tagged late in a fight with Louis but Louis would eventually cut the ring enough to at least hit Ali.

Louis looked slow partially because he was efficient at using distance.... Why waste energy stalking your prey? My karate sensei used to fight the same way, he would in a matter of a few minutes walk you down.... everytime you hit him it was like hitting a rock (you hit elbows as he came in) as he slowly took a step here, a step there until you had to fight! A terrifying ordeal!

I am not saying that everything Louis did was perfect.... Shcmelling proved that was not the case, but technically when you walk a man down to engage him you take his real estate slowly with efficient footwork, you don't try to run in on a straight line and without being set throw your shots This will tire you out for when you do catch up to him. Like Foreman versus Ali. George spent so much time trying to get there that he blew his powder.

Louis was a master at stalking his guy to land a bomb and Ali was a master at nuetralizing this approach. Louis would not pull a foreman and while Frazier had his own way of catching people Louis was a lot more careful that Frazier.

Ali never fought anyone as technically sound as Louis. Nearly all of Ali's greatest opponents were awkward fighters who eschewed proper technique.
    • Liston relied on slower, step-in punches, and didn't like fighting on the front foot
    • Floyd Patterson threw all sorts of leaping punches
    • Frazier was a one-handed fighter who relied too heavily on the left hook
    • Foreman rarely used the jab; he just came forward and threw power shots
    • Ken Norton was the definition of awkward
I'm not trying to say that Ali's competition wasn't great, because it was. But most of the fighters Ali faced weren't brilliant technicians in the classic style. A lot of writers at the time said that the 1970s heavyweights weren't that good because they were so unorthodox - including Ali. Ali was great because he could adapt to all sorts of crazy techniques and styles, but the definition of a pure orthodox fighter, Joe Louis, could give him shitloads of trouble.

    Did you see Ali-Cooper 1?
Cooper knocked him out and Ali should have been either disqualified or the fight should have been stopped on a TKO in Cooper's favor as Ali did not answer the bell for the next round.
Just think if Joe hit him with a hook like that?
It would have been lights out for Ali.

    Great call.
When Gene Tunney was heavyweight champion and recognized by many as the best fighter in the world at that time, Tunney said he wasn't near in Wilde's class as a fighter, called Wilde the greatest fighter he ever saw.

As annoying as you are, it's apparent that you have alot of boxing knowledge. My question is that why is it that you havn't got any further in life than just being a message board troll posting out of your mom's basement? What a terrible waste...

That is a silly post you made, "Gatti."
Rahman would have been nothing more than a sparring partner for Louis, and couldn't last in sparring with Joe, either.
Why dosen't everyone get back on topic here instead of bashing the greatest heavyweight ever in Joe Louis?

Rahman would've been a sparring partner, but James Braddock puts him on his ass in an actual fight?

Nobody is bashing Joe Louis, "Stinger", I just think your logic is flawed.

Anyone who uses an example of a punch that a boxer RARELY if only once got hit with, is setting up a strawman to show they could be beat by their favorite fighter, ridiculous. What makes you think they could land the same punch :nono:

  26. His_Royness

    His_Royness "Twinkle Toes" McJack

Yeah plus Ali took shots like the one Stinger is referring to - and took them well. It's not even a good example considering Ali's great chin. Louis' was much more vulnerable than Ali's and Ali has it a lot easier than Louis to land shots - that Mythical Matchup is actually a no brainer if you think beyond "who is my personal hero" for just a second.

Actually, I was in court Tuesday. I was named primary caregiver of my son. I usually spend 60-70 hours a week with him, mostly during daytime hours. I work evenings, and he spends most nights with his mother. He's got speech delay and maybe autism. Taking care of him is a full-time job.

Anyway, you probably spend more time on the internet than I do, and you suck at it because you don't know much about boxing, or anything else, really.

Joe Louis's defense wasn't that good, but he sure as hell could recover from a shot, and he almost always beat the ten-count. The only time he was knocked out in his prime was after a prolonged beating against Max Schmeling. I mean, you'd have to be pretty stupid to watch Louis eat overhand right after overhand right against Schmeling and suggest that Rahman could put him down with one shot.

Boy, that's why I hate debating stuff like this. People put on these blinders and only see former greats in the most glowing light.

The truth be told, Rahman would be the absolute most physically imposing opponent Louis ever faced.

I'm not saying Rahman could ever beat Louis, but his size alone would make him a hell of fight for Louis. And Rahman could certainly survive a sparring session with Louis.

It's unreal how hyperbolized fighters get after 70 years.
