Good matchup but I go with Patterson ... Charles had only mild success at heavy and I think Pattersons chin would hold up in this case... Patterson would bully Ezzard with his quickness.
You're both wrong! Charles had good success at Heavy, beating Walcott twice, Louis and giving a prime Marciano perhaps his toughest ever fights.... BUT Louis was an OLD man when Charles beat him (came out of retirement and was clearly way past his best) and Louis was not the best Heavyweight the world had ever seen...that honour has to go to a prime Ali.
Who ? A nearly retired Louis ?? How fuckin many no name fighters did he lose to ? - yeah , thats what I thought ..
Charles should have won his fourth fight with Walcott. And it's not like Walcott was some shit fighter.
Yeah , and he should have beaten many of those no-name bums that he lost to as well ... This is why I say he had "mild" success at heavy and not "no success" or "great success" ... Not sure what you can't understand here ... :dunno:
Charles ran out of money, and fought on long after he should have. Name one "no-name bum" that beat Charles before 1955. Look at the fighters who beat him when he was just slightly past his prime (before 1955): Rocky Marciano - One of the best heavyweights of all time. Harold Johnson - In the IBHOF and a lot of people thought Charles won. Nino Valdez - Top-3 heavyweight Rex Layne - He was a top heavyweight, but given how easily Charles beat him in their two other encounters, the speculation is that Charles kept his hands in his pockets in exchange for a title shot down the line. Here are the fighters Charles lost to in his prime: Jersey Joe Walcott - Charles beat him twice, and was badly underweight (some say 168 pounds) when he started training for their third encounter, which Walcott won. Their fourth match Walcott won in name only. Charles outboxed him and was busier. Elmer "Violent" Ray - Ray is easily one of the greatest heavyweights you've never heard of. He started out with a terrible record, but once he dedicated himself to boxing, he had one of the greatest runs the division's ever seen. H otly contested decision. Here are the fighters Charles lost to when he was a middleweight/small light heavyweight, before his prime: Lloyd Marshall - He'll be in the IBHOF within five years. He beat other Hall-of-Fame fighters and near Hall-of-Fame fighters, including Jake LaMotta, Freddie Steele, Jack Chase, Joey Maxim, Holman Williams, Lou Broulliard, Ken Overlin and Charley Burley. Charles beat him 2/3. Jimmy Bivins - In the IBHOF, one of the greatest fighters of all time. Charles beat him 3/4. Kid Tunero - Top Cuban middleweight, disputed decision Ken Overlin - Near Hall-of-Fame fighter, although I doubt he'll make it in, given his alleged mob connections. Absolutely no bums there. You are uninformed or too stupid to understand the information there.
None of that matters cause when its all put together , he had "mild" success just like I said several posts ago ..
That's stupid. Mild success usually doesn't entail winning the undisputed World Heavyweight Championship from the greatest heavyweight who had ever lived and nearly beating Rocky Marciano.
