was watching ringsides greatest little men of all time, when they got to duran and were showing the leonard rematch, the famous no mas fight, bert sugar mentioned that duran never actually said those words, but what he said was a string of curses, basically saying to hell with this (he was pissed cause he wanted to fight and leonard was clowning and he had had enough), the "no mas" was basically invented by howard cossell anyone know bout this and what do you think?
The infamous "No Más" (which you will read Duran never said) fight. Duran stopped fighting with 16 seconds to go in the 8th round to tell the referee he did not want to continue. Duran claimed he couldn't continue because of stomach cramping, causing referee Octavio Meyran to call the fight a TKO win for Leonard. Many others felt that Duran had simply "quit" out of frustration because he was behind in the fight (not by much though) and tired of Leonard's taunting. However, Duran actually said "Yo no boxeo con el payaso" which translates into "I am not boxing with this clown." Although Duran is widely remembered for the now famous words, "no más," he never actually said them. It was actually commentator Howard Cosell who uttered the phrase.
That is close to it, Randy Gordon told what really happened right after that fight in The Ring. That was back during same day weigh ins, and Duran had starved for two and a half days to make the weight morning of the fight. Right after he made the weight he stopped off of the scales and ate a grapefruit, and then downed a sizzling hot steak right off of the grill red hot, he drank ice cold orange juice with it so he could manage the tempatire of the steak. He then ate a baked potato with butter and large caesar salad, and then repeated the order and ate all of that as well. He then went upstairs to his room and took a nap for a few hours, and when he woke up, he ordered and ate the same meal again as well! Gordon was in his locker room after the fight and said he immediately ran to the toilet and what he heard was like a large baloon with all of the air being let out of it, and Duran emerged from the toilet with a big smile on his face. Gordon said that Duran quit because he had a "bellyache", and he did, and he had a huge case of the shits. Aaron Pryor also had a bad case of the shits the day he fought Alexis Arguello the first time for similar reasons, but Panama Lewis controlled that during the fight by administering peppermint schnapps to him in between rounds with the famous "bottle that I mixed".
Thats right, he never said "NO MAS" and Jack Johnson never knocked any of Ketchels teeth out. These things are made up.
I heard from a guy who was THERE in the corner.......that Duran shit himself, and that is why he quit.
