Yo-Sam Choi dies Former WBC light featherweight champion Yo-Sam Choi, who has been in a coma since winning a bout on December 25th in Seoul, South Korea, passed away at around midnight Wednesday after being removed from a ventilator. On Tuesday the fighter was declared brain dead by the Seoul Asan Hospital after two examinations by a neurosurgeon-led nine-member panel. According to the Korea Times, Choi's heart, kidneys, liver and corneas were transplanted to patients on the Korean Network for Organ Sharing (KONOS) patient list. Choi (32-5, 19 KOs) won the WBC light flyweight title from Saman Sorjaturong in October 1999 and defended it four times, finally relinquishing it to Jorge Arce in July 2002. The Fightnews.com staff sends its sympathies to Choi's family and friends. RIP/
His fight with Sorjaturong is worth seeing. He fights like a mini-Holyfield with tight punches and blatant head-butting and it's comical (and surreal) that the ref let's him get away with it as much as he did. (I think he loses one point when it should have been 50)...which lead to his Yo-Ram Choi nickname. It's been a while since a major figure in our sport has passed from ring injuries, in mY memory, at least. Hopefully, it will be longer next time. Choi won't be a big enough figure to get the ban-boxing movement rolling again (in the US, at least), but the newer fans should be aware that it always (always) follows a death or major injury of a popular fighter.
Oscar vs. Trinidad/Jones winner There's been talk of Oscar fighting Hatton in May and talk of Oscar fighting Cotto in May. But I get the distinct feeling Oscar will fight the winner of Trinidad-Jones. Oscar has tried for years to get Tito to engage in a rematch. If Trinidad defeats Jones, I think the rematch with Oscar is inked within two weeks. And Oscar can go out fighting Trinidad and Cotto this year. If Jones defeats Trinidad, I think Oscar and Roy will fight in May at a catchweight below 168. And, if Jones defeats Trinidad and Oscar, Golden Boy can match Jones with Hopkins at the end of the year in one big final payday for both guys. Plus, if Oscar loses to Jones, there's still a fight with Cotto to be made at the end of the year and his promotional company can also promote Jones-Hopkins 2. That scenario makes more sense than Oscar fighting Hatton -- who Mayweather stopped. That bout leads nowhere. And the Cotto fight is really more dangerous for Oscar than fighting Trinidad or Jones at this point, since they are both well past their primes. Also, Jones is shorter than Hopkins was. Oscar, Trinidad and Jones are all roughly the same size. Seems like the best play for Oscar and his company, don't you think?
I just don't see a fight between Oscar and Roy. De La Hoya lost both of his fights at 160 and now he's going to move up to 168 and fight Jones? The absolute only way it would ever happen is if Roy narrowly scrapes home a victory against Trinidad and looks like shit in the process. Oscar-Tito on the other hand is always a possibility i suppose. Especially as both guys are only fighting for the money.
Tito is going to lose to Jones so Oscar and Tito will never have a rematch. Oscar will never fight at or above 160 again, he's fat and looks like crap any higher than 154. Jones isn't getting below 168 EVER. Oscar will fight Cotto or a rematch with Floyd.
Oscar isn't scared to fight anyone, that much is certain. There is a point where it's just too much though. He'd have to fight at a weight far beyond his best to face Jones and I don't see him doing that. If Jones could get down to 160 I have no doubt Oscar would take the fight. I just don't think there is a acceptable weight that they could agree on.
LMAO @ the thought of Oscar ever being RETARDED enough to fight Roy.:: I dont care how washed up Roy is, he'd be up on man slaughter charges if he ever fought the Golden Cross Dresser.
Roy Jones' chin is more fragile than my left nut. Anybody has a chance against that washed up trousers now.
Not in Korea, either. Boxing hit its height of popularity a few years after Kim Duk-koo died. I would also appreciate it if Choi's name was written correctly in this thread, "Choi Yo-sam."
boxing in korea was popular until jung koo chang and myung woo yuh retired. actually, it didnt even hit its reach until after kim died. i thought korean boxing was at its peak in the late 80s. anyways, RIP Yo Sam Choi
If Oscar moved up 170 and fought Roy he gets KO'd! No ifs ands or buts. I dont care if Roy was on his death bed, he'd lay Goldie out on the canvas in no more than 4 rounds. Could you imagine how soft Oscar's body would be at 170? Not to mention that Roy STILL has faster hands than Oscar. Roy would nail him once to the body, and Oscar would find a soft spot on the canvas. It'd be child abuse.
Once Jermaine takes care of your Tom-boy, Kelly Pavlik, Roy will be next, to find out who gets custody of Bernard Hopkins :crafty: .
