This thread is inspired by the accusation that certain racial slurs and slangs are acceptable and others are not in this forum.

As a result, I want everyone here to have a say as to what they find offensive and what is not, so that we have a clear picture of what should and should not be accepted from now on.

Ropeadope compares the use of chank to redneck.

IMO one is a very offensive ethnic slur and the other is a somewhat socially accepted term, much like trailer trash, describing lower class whites in America.

Jeff Foxworthy, made a career out of describing Rednecks ... and most of america that found his comedy funny , laughed.

But .... Ropeadope finds it unacceptable.

So nows the time to have your say, so there will be no more accusations of bias.

PS ... For future reference , if anything that offends you is posted , a pm to me or any mod is recommended. I and the other mods , cannot read every post in this forum.

Top right of EVERY post is a numbered link to that post which will take a mod directly to the offensive post. This way you cannot complain that something slipped through the cracks ... you can complain that your complaint went ignored.

Rednecks are allowed to use the term "redneck" and N*ggers are allowed to use the term "annoy".

of course, some judgement has to be used. oc's consistently inappropriate comments were unacceptable, so he needs to know that. in real life people wouldn't say it, so don't say it here. if you want to make a serious point, make it. deliberate, repeated, attention-seeking aggravation is just a detriment to the board.

trailer trash is a way of stereotyping. same w/ rednecks, nigs, chinks, gooks, sandnigs, jews, and etcs.

i dont see a difference between ethnic slurs and stereotyping. it is what it is.

what's the real difference between saying all koreans like spicy food or dogs compared to all jews are cheap?

either form is a way of generalizing and stereotyping a certain group of people.

if someone wants to use this language to be ironic, satirical, great. oc wasn't. he used it when making offensive, ignorant generalisations about ethnic groups.

I think "right-wing lunatic" should be acceptable. Political affiliation is one thing; it's something you choose. Race is something you're born into, and sexual orientation and religion are kind of on the borderline.

 

If it's hatefull or constant, like OC, then it shouldn't be allowed.

Otherwise, most of the stuff on the forum is done in good fun.

A thread about this isn't necessary.

Too many accusations of bias have made it necessary.

So now I want to hear the solutions since it's been handled improperly in the past.

Yeah, now I see the thread where this all started, so I recant the last line of my post.

But still, we're blowing something out of proportion for the sake of blowing something out of proportion.

Temporary banning is fine. Permanent is touchy because he's been here for a long time. Even still, it's the same routine from him time and time again.

Comes back and plays nice, but every so often, he'll drop in a touch of racism to remind people he's still OC. Then he slowly turns up the volume until he finally gets banned again.

 

The thing is that people are getting months-long bans for simple name calling, and then he gets a two-day ban for repeated, racist posting.

 

Isn't racism tradition around here? :dunno:
