the fight produced short-term success but led to long-term misery (Calzaghe fighting Jones rather than a top light heavyweight, and the fight resulting in HBO's biggest money loser in years).

My exact fear was that the fight would be a ratings success, thus giving the boxing-illiterate brass at HBO the idea that the sport needed more catchweight fights featuring golden oldies. Is that not what followed?

Think about it, the best month of 2008 for boxing was in March, the last month in which the schedule was already filled prior to this bout. Beyond that, Margarito-Cotto turned out to be the only memorable night of boxing for the rest of the year, from an entertainment and ratings standpoint.

 

March 2008 is the best month of boxing since i became a fan of the sport.

 

Boxing has not changed from that fight for the better or worse.....anyone not afflicted would agree. This is truly a gift the impact I have on people.
