What a fight that was. I think it will go down as one of the greatest fights in history. Two giant heavyweights throwing non stop bombs at eachother. The fight had everything: drama, blood, guts. Vitaly wanted to prove that he isn't a coward Lewis didn't want to lose to protect his legacy
i'm sure he would have ,in the end he got the W against Vitaly but it was a cheap win. Lewis was old and rich and knew the rematch would only bring more pain so he chose against it.
HBO offered him $30 milion. Most rational people would have done what Lewis did. Like you say, he is already rich and the re would have brought him more pain.
Oh Golota Bowe by far. Lewis Vitaly was good but no knockdowns and not too many flush shots landed. Lots of akward punches in that fight.
Bowe vs Golota was technically a better fight but Lewis vs Vitaly was more exciting IMO. I was on the edge of my seat for the entire fight.
well for me an added excitment bonus was that I'm a big fan of Golota in the Lewis Vitaly fight I didn't really root for either guy. That fight did expose Vitaly's lack of a true big punch.
Agree. Let's be honest. The cut stoppage, in my opinion, saved Vitaly from being brutally knocked out at some point over the next couple rounds. The cut stoppage increased the percieved competitiveness of the last couple rounds of the fight. However, in reality, Lewis was starting to take over and Vitaly was headed south. If not for the cut, and if the bout had progressed to it's natural conclusion, the fight would not be remembered so glowingly. It would be remembered as a fight where Vitaly had some moments early but eventually fell like most of the challengers Lewis faced.
as much as I hate Lemmon the loser.. I agree.. he was settleing in and over the next couple rounds would have KO'd the german robot
I agreed with the stoppage of the fight then, and I agree with it now. I don't agree with the lack of a rematch. It seems like Lennox got a free pass on that one.
dsimon writes: I agree with the sentiments on this thread. Lewis was coming on. Vitalie got to look good because he took advantage of Lewis training for Kirk Johnson. But he did look good, so be it. Lewis was just smart.... he knew he didn't have the desire to get up for a big physical fight against Vitalie. Itrs not like he fought anyone else who was an easier fight though.
Well, it was completely one-sided for most of it...and the ending was even more unsatisfactory than Lewis-Klitschko.
At the end of 6, one guy was dead-tired (Lewis), and the other guy was tired as well and falling all over his opponent after taking a short right hand on the inside. The fight was up for grabs, but it's irrelevant anyway, because Lewis won fair and square.
Medusa, sealed his greatness as the best ever, by digging deep, and coming through a bit of early adversity, to stop a very tough and awkward opponent, who was CLEARLY the second best heavyweight around at the time, he retired on top, it wasn't his best performance, but how the fuck are you supposed to look good or dominant against a style like Vitali's?... "Mohammed Ali would've!"... bullshit.
Even if Lewis KO'd Vitaly, it still would have been remembered as a great fight. This fight was total war. All skills were thrown out of the window. Perhaps the tide would have turned again in favor of Vitaly. Such things happen. If the fight was stopped after round 4, people would have been saying "Vitaly was about to KO Lewis". Lewis might have KO'd Vitaly, he might have not. Vitaly vs Lewis is one of the greatest heavyweight fights of all time.
I believe that even the best Lewis would have had problems with Vitaly's style, hight and granite chin. A rematch would have been another monstrous brawl. Vitaly also doesn't have enough one punch KO power to knock out Lewis.
