In wanting all the "old guard" fighters to go away?:dunno: I don't care to see RJJ and DLH anymore. In fact, I don't care to see Hop, Tito, and the rest of the 90's gang anymore. If Roy was fighting a legit contender that has some kind of credibility at making a title shot at LtHW I might watch. But I just don't care to see these battle of the washed ups anymore. Are there guys who are serious fans on this site who want to watch these fights still?:dunno:
What these guys fail to understand (Jones, Holy, etc) is that they will never, no matter how hard they try, recapture their glory days. Even if they luck into a win against a legit fighter, they are not the same. They are not among the best in the world.
I didn't mind fights like Mayorga-Vargas or Jones-Trinidad because while I had no interest in the fights, there was no title being held hostage so if their fan bases wanted to watch them go at it, that's fine. But seeing the supposed "real" light heavyweight title being defended against non-light heavyweights is a joke. Tarver defended the title against basically a career-middleweight in Hopkins and now Hopkins is freezing the light heavyweight title by fighting non-light heavyweights.
Most of them know that. They're just trying to sell fights and keep up their persona. But Roy Jones Jr. is one of the most self-aware fighters in the sport.
My thoughts exactly. Even if RJJ KO'd Tito in the first, what did he expect the reaction to be? That he's back? It was a rediculous fight.
I disagree. I think many older fighters that were once P4P greats refuse to acknowledge that age is playing a major role in their demise. Instead they blame habits, trainers, weight, etc. I've heard very few fighter say "Darn, I'm just too old".
I might've been in this camp after the second Taylor fight regarding Hopkins, but he is no worse than the 2nd best Lt. Heavyweight in the world, and I don't mind seeing the best guys continue to press on.
Nope I don't mind seeing these guys fight. I say fight as long as you still have the talent to fight. It appears that all the guys that have been mentioned still have something to give to the game of boxing. Besides who else is there to pass the torch to. I mean it ain't like in basketball where when Jordan left you had McGrady, Iverson, Kobe, and now Lebron, Carmello, D. Wade etc. So until we have some cats that are ready to take the sport to the next level I say keep on keepin on. And yes I will pay to watch them dudes fight cause you never know when it will be their last. I'll Holla 5000
You are right, other than Cotto and I'm reaching here, I don't think we have a strong PPV seller outside of DLH, PBF, RJJ and Pacquaio.
See that's the problem we want these guys to move on but they can still compete. Now Holyfield for example can't compete but Hopkins, DLH, Tito, and Roy can still compete. Hell if DLH could make 147 he would be the favorite over Margarito, Cintron, perhaps Williams and I wouldn't be totally 100% certain that Cotto could beat him. Hopkins is that man at 175, Tito could cause noise at 160, and Roy would still give cats fit at 175. So hell until someone comes along and just trashes these dudes then let these dudes continue on with their career. But that's just me. I'll Holla 5000
If they stopped fighting, then you would have to find something else to complain about in the sport, and have to come up with an original thread.
Boxing has ALWAYS Been this Way... The "Old Guard" Cats Hang Around UNTIL They're Bumped Off by the "New Guard"...It's a NATURAL Progression that REED Really DOESN'T have a Problem w/... Joe Louis was Bumped Off by Marciano...Ali was Bumped Off by Larry Holmes, Larry Holmes was Bumped Off by Mike Tyson... Call it a "NECESSARY Evil"... REED
Sometimes I feel like they are around TOO long but , then when you stop and think about it , they can still mix it up with the younger top guys ... Roy could possibly be a decent fight with Calzaghe - and Calzaghe just beat the younger top contender to prove himself as the man. Tito could match well against the Taylor/Pavlik winner and even possibly beat one of them to become the real middleweight champ. DLH just went to an SD against P4P #1 fighter and if he were to match up with say Cotto or another younger top fighter , people would still give him a real shot at winning. Hopkins , if he were to fight a young top fighter , people would give him a chance as well .. Mosely , he arguably just had an even fight with the undefeated young champion of the world .... With that said , and these guys are still this good , well then we can't complain about the fact that they still fight. They just need to stop fighting each other ...
That's the point, they're not fighting those fighters. Instead, they're inventing new weight classes to fight each other.
Another reason not to mind fights like Mayorga-Vargas or Jones-Tito is that they sometimes turn out to be damn good fights, which Mayorga-Vargas certainly did (in fact, IMO, it was one of the best fights of last year). But I agree with your second statemnt. Seeing someone like Winky get a shot at the light-heavyweight title instead of an actual light-heavyweight is a joke.
I just want to see the 'career middleweight' ...Who to my astonishment, happens to be naturally larger than ANYONE in the supermiddleweight division and most in the lightheavyweight division....:eeeek:?.. beaten the fuck down, for you see, the hype around Hopkins is pretty sick, this guy was "done".."No interest in seeing him fight a Roy rematch" shortly after Jermaine gave birth to a second son, and now he's "Da REAL champ" "amazing, ruthless, cunning!" and "p4p 2!"...,...god damn, there are atleast 9 or 10 other fighters in and around his division that would hand him his fucking arse, but because he's this.....:shit: "American legend" and "greater than Marvin Hagler" (an infamous fightbeat consensus) ........the grotesque cunt is immunized baby, with that "OLD!" pop up, which was ejaculated a little pre-maturely, on standby for whenever the greatest eye-searer of the last 20 years, decides to lose.
