Mayorga had the significant Six Heads win, the surprising Forrest KO, and the just as surprising (and impressive) Forrest decision. He doesn't fit into this topic at all.

David Tua didn't get overhyped after the Ruiz fight, his breakthrough performance was the Ibeabuchi fight. If anything, Ruiz became way underhyped because of that fight.

This is right before I became a big boxing fan so I can't comment. The Nunn I saw post-Toney never seemed to deserve the accolades he received, though.

What? Tua was nothing if not hyped after that KO...and frankly, after both of his first round KO's on HBO (against Ruiz and followed it up with Briggs-conqueror Wilson).

How you could say his breakthrough performance was against Ibeabuchi is beyond me. He lost the fight, and Ibeabuchi was a complete unknown before the fight (and took the fight as a replacement).

Tua-Izonritei was more of a breakthrough performance for him than Ibeabuchi, because he showed he had late power (as he would later do against Maskaev), but it also came in a fight with huge punch-stats and there was no controversy about the stoppage.

Mesi wasn't brilliantly dangerous early. He was strong enough to get on the inside against Williamson and connect with his chin, but Williamson had already been decked (and KO'd) by that point in his career.

HBO was looking for a heavyweight to hype entering the NOTYH card, and Mesi and Guinn both came away from the card with way too much talk.

When you knock out Lennox Lewis of Roy Jones Jr. you deserve the credit and the hype.

The unnecessary "hype" with Rahman was his performance leading up to the KO...because he was clearly getting outboxed and losing on the scorecards.

Rahman did his best to sell/market himself to the public leading up to the rematch, but that couldn't mask how hard he tried to avoid it.

I dont think you can really put Rahman and Tarver in the same...

Rahman was a garbage man and started boxing very late in life..

Tarver is an amatuer legend and was considered a real threat

He was a very good amateur, and was considered by many as the best American chance for gold before the Olympics.

you are saying he was not a great amatuer?

not just that.. he was a legit contender

Rahman was a big strong guy and a thug but didn't lace 'em up until into his 30's

I'd say there is a difference between olympic bronze medallist and "an amateur legend". He was a respected amateur of course but far from a legend and NOT seen as a threat to Jones (although he was more legitimate contender than Rahman for Lewis)

He was far more accomplished than just an Olympic bronze medal and he was considered Jones' top challenger at light heavyweight.

Maybe not a legend, but he certainly had a standout amateur career...and maybe not seen as a huge "threat" - though regarded as a good puncher - but part of that's because Jones had just beaten a heavyweight Jones hadn't yet fought since coming back down in weight.

I had Mayorga losing the rematch, so for me, he fits in there nicely.

For that matter, so does Six Heads.

    BULLSHIT...

REED Doubts if there R 10 MORE ACCOMPLISHED U.S. Ammy Fighters than Antonio Tarver...

He was THE FACE of the '96 U.S. Boxing Team (Consisting of Floyd, David Reid, Vargas, Zahir Raheem & Others)& it was a HUGE Disappointment when he DIDN'T Win Gold...

"Respected" DOESN'T Even Scratch the Surface of Tarver's Ammy Career...

Whilst 'Lemmon' went into the first Rahman fight in Carnival City fully prepared, and not at all under-trained, fresh from a Hollywood film shoot and hideously under-prepared for fighting at altitude...

I really worry about brother LOK sometimes...

Fine, you're right, Tua has had so many impressive performances I got them mixed up. Which means he doesn't belong in this thread.

I consider the Ibeabuchi performance to be his breakthrough because it was the first time he went some rounds without getting his ass thoroughly outboxed.

And to dismiss Ibeabuchi a complete unknown but use John Ruiz as a benchmark is amusing, at the very least.
