Tua shouldn't be in this thread because he's had multiple KOs over contenders and former champs.

Overhyped doesn't mean he wasn't that good; it means he wasn't as good as he was portrayed after that fight. Toney was never a top p4p talent, imo, and yet he reached the p4p pinnacle in a magazine or two and top 2-3 pretty much everywhere, despite being outboxed by tiberi, etc.

So he was the face of a team which won 1 gold medal. Is that what you are saying?

I'd guess there are 10 more accomplished, but regardless Tarver was a superb amateur and was an amateur world champ (which is why he was considered the US best hope as someone pointed out earlier). Tarver being so highly regarded is also probably solely responsible for Jirov getting the outstanding boxer award since he beat him.

It was Tua's first HBO appearance...and while he deserved to steal the show from the night's supposed star (Shannon Briggs) even before he took the ring, he wasn't as nearly as good as what people wanted to believe after that performance.

People made all kinds of unneccesarry comparisons to Mike Tyson (aided by Larry Merchant's commentary that night)...and from that point on Tyson-Tua became one of the most talked about non-fights in the sport.

Ruiz was more well known that Ibeabuchi prior to their fights with Tua...frankly Maskaev, Izonritei and Ibeabuchi were all pretty anonymous prior to their fights with Tua...Maskaev was probably the best known, but that was only because he lasted about half a round with Oliver McCall on Fox.

Tua would have beat Tyson in his prime. No question in my mind.

I'd be willing to bet that there has been ten guys who have won Olympic gold:lol:

Amateur legends are likes of Savon, Stevensson, Vinent and Breland, not every failed olympic hopeful

Don't bother. Some of us have been trying to tell him ever since the fight.

Funny, LOK hasn't mentioned an ass once in this thread...
