Anyone think Taylor may have lost his CHIN?? Throughout the history of boxing there have been fighters that have permanently lost their ability to take a punch after being brutally KO'ed. Roy Jones and Meldrick Taylor instantly come to mind. In Roys case he came back only some months against Glen Johnson after being KO'ed by Tarver, and look what happened! Taylor is coming back waay too soon against Kelly, and I wonder how's he going to react to getting hit flush on the chin. I am a bit worried about Taylor, because even though I am going for Kelly, I have always liked JT. We'll see on Sat.
The brutally of the KO definitely fits the criteria for chin breaker, plus he was absorbing clean shots all night.
Yeah, but he took most of Kelly's flush shots up until the was KTFO. I think JT showed he has a pretty good chin. Even in the first Hopkins fight he took some good shots...was hurt....but still took them.
I'm not saying he had a great chin, but he has proven to us, especially in the Pavlik fight (for 6 rounds at least)that he could take a good shot.
Pavlik is like a WRECKING machine, but it is in the ACCUMULATION that he gets guys out of there. He seems not to lose power as the fight progresses, it's the ability to take a punch as the fight goes on that diminishes as his opponent accumulates the wear and tear. He goes to the body exceptionally well. He is certainly not a speed demon but his jab and his reach are key to land fully extended flush shots. The two final left hands Taylor could prove DEVASTATING. His body literallly went LIMP after the second to last shot.
Another important fact is that JT doesn't roll punches (turning his head on contact, etc.), so he normally takes shots flush. This wasn't as obvious when he was fighting bums.
One fight does not prove such a thing, IMO. One way or the other. The jury never came back on JT's chin. It might this weekend thouh.
I don't think that a person loses his chin. I think what a person loses is confidence. Once a person loses confidence then that's what causes the downfall. The thing is if Taylor still has his confidence then he could make the fight go longer. However I really believe that the longer the fight goes on the more confidence Taylor will gain and the better chances he has of winning the fight. But if Taylor gets hit and hurt early and if he can't get out of the way of Pavlik's jab the fight will not make it to the middle rounds. By the way Tarver hit Roy on the chin. Johnson hit Roy on the top of the head. I'll Holla 5000
Since it's been nearly 4 years since those KOs:eeeek: , I have watched them so many times that I can't even count. If you watch the Tarver KO of Roy, the spot on that Roy's head hits the canvas, is the same spot that Johnson clocked him and put him out. ld: It was definitely an injury that was not healed and probably still isn't:doh:
The reason Taylor lost the first fight is because his lack of finishing ability. he had Pavlik virtually knocked out on his feet and couldn't put him away. As far as i'm concerned is either one of these guys could win on any given night. They are pretty close in ability.
He had Pavlik STUNNED with an EQUILIBRIUM shot. His legs were gone for a minute. Like how Larry Holmes knocked down Cooney in the second round of their fight. Pavlik wouldn't have gone down if he didn't choose to show how brave and unhurt he was, putting his hands down and chin out, and in the process open to aTaylor combo.
Yep... REED Thinks this is THE BIGGEST Reason Taylor Fought Jr. Middle's (Winky, Spinks, Ouma) After Getting the Title from Bernard... Jermain's Chin Probably WASN'T Holding Up tooo Well N Sparring, vs. TRUE Middleweights... REED
dsimon writes: Exacty! The intrigue about Taylor is really very simple. It is also the reason why it took Hopkins a lot of effort to beat him (We all know who won that first fight). Taylor is very strong in that sort of rawboned country boy kind of way. He reminds me in some ways of a guy like Max Bauer. Bauer was strong as an ox and he threw his right like a Neanderthal. If he caugfht you with it it was a devistating punch, but thats all he could do. And it wasn't that Bauer was a technician with the punch (as compared to a guy like Schmelling) it was that Bauer was so fucking cock strong that when he hit one with that shot it was a hard punch. Taylor is a middle weight version of Maxie Bauer. Like Bauer everyone sees the talent and the strength that makes Taylor competative with the best, but nobody can teach the guy a trick or two! Also, if you watch those punches he hit Pavlik with there is no doubt that they are good shots. Like Bauer one could see a shot like that doing real damage.... it is why Hopkins didn't want to get too physical with Taylor.
:: Worst comparison ever. And dsimon, it's Baer not Bauer like jack Bauer :: Taylor is not a 1 shot monster, he has decent power and that's it. Pavlik just got careless and Taylor landed some flush shots.
Maybe.. no one really knows and it's really a silly argument, fact is Pavlik recovered.. he fought smart and recovered quickly where as Taylor got his ass KO'd IF this If that... all moot
No it's not a silly argument! Pavlik was in serious trouble and Taylor got sloppy! Pavlik got real lucky Taylor is not a finisher otherwise Pavlik would have been stopped!
IF's don't mean jack shit! Fact is it didn't happen and Taylor was the one laid out in the corner at the end of the day. WAR PAVLIK!!!
Taylor is very unathletic for an Affercan American. Reed has said it. It is beyond dispute at this stage. A more athletic sort could have taken Pavlik out, it just so happens, as fate dictates, that God put a one-in-a-million unathletic Afro in front of Pavlik, like God opening the seas at Hebron for Moses, it was just one of those things.
Look at the shot that hurt Pavlik to begin with. a giant looping sloppy right hand. Go look. He's sloppy.
