That fight was garbage, no doubt, but boxing AIN'T dying. Watch Enzo v Haye in a fortnight. Then you'll see a fight...
Yeah, Eastern Europeans who fight smart = boxing is dying. Vernon Forrest - Shane Mosley II was at least as bad as this. As I have stated before: heavyweight boxing has changed. Guys are big now, they hit hard now, Shit, keep in mind that this small Sultan is the size of prime George Foreman! What this means is that fights are slower and tactics come to play more and more. You can't just walk in and take shots, it just doesn't work that way anymore at heavyweight
that was an awful fight. I thought Wlad would annihilate him, but he didn't deserve shit. He is a born beta who just blows so much. Where are you, Lennox Lewis?
Exactly. And being exciting doesn't win fights. Wlad has KOed 40 guys who have fought more eciting than Sultan or himself
Lennox lewis never had a fight where he was this tentative to throw. Its not like Klitschko was fighting David Tua, he was fighting fucking Sultan Ibragimov, and basically admitted to being a born beta after the fight. "I didn't wanna miss my right and be off balance" What kind of pussy shit is that? You Euros can claim tactics all you want, but this fight was garbage, and ANY decent HW from even 10 years ago would've butchered either one of these guys. Where are you 45-year old Larry Holmes?
He has some valid points, but it doesn't neccessarily contradict the thread starts point, that this is the kind of stuff that is turning people away form boxing. The general public don't care if they're bigger, hit harder and because of that, fight like scared girls...they want to see action, however it happens. Fights like these, do nothing to further the sport. Nothing.
So since Forrest-Mosley II was a crap fight, Arturo Gatti beats them both? Since Hopkins-Tarver was a slow fight, Paul Briggs KOs them both? Should I go on? I completely agree that the fight was not crowd-pleasing and fights like this won't get any new audience for boxing. However there is nothing much you could do about that unless you make a new rule that forbids blocking punches. Stop dreaming about a Jack Dempsey who walks through shots to KO big men, it does not happen anymore
I could accept that argument except for the fact that Klitschko has a much higher KO percentage than Lewis...and the Ibragimov and Peter fights are the only times he's been the distance in years.
Ibragimov weighs 218 pounds and nobody forbid Wlad to throw a right hand for four rounds, well maybe Steward did.
Ugo, you are good poster and I have a lot of respect for you bro, BUT in all seriousness... ...that fight was shit
It's not even about KO's. It's about attempting to finish a fight. Fans want action. They don't HAVE to be KO's for action. Show some intent. Some wish to finish. PS: What does Lewis have to do with anything? I haven't used him as a banner to prop up as an example of the way things should be done. Heavyweight boxing was on the slide during his reign as well. It's just continued on now.
Yet Mayweather-Pay Per Hoya was the barnburners of old also:notallthere::: Yep,those fights make fans!!
Oh for sure this fight was pure wank!! I just wish (as do millions) that Vlad would just open up more!! But unless the opportunity presents itself,Vlad don't go for any unnecassary dangers.
Why waste your time putting words into my mouth? Find a post of mine where I don't do anything BUT tear that fight to shreds. Please. Add a few more emoticons mate. They help sooo much.
Yeah, but Lewis was similarly criticized after fights like the Tua fight, McCall rematch, the Akinwande fight, the Butler fight. I can even remember people criticizing his performance in the first Holyfield fight saying he was too cautious. Klitschko isn't Lewis, but in some ways he's less encouraging for opponents to come at his aggressively because of how damn consistent he is with his left jab...and Klitschko used his right hand pretty well, defensively, in this fight.
Unnecessary dangers? He's fighting a dude half his size and with no power who he can land a right hand at will. For fucks sake man!! Terrible fight. Anyone who says otherwise is a, well...
But what does this have to do with the thread, mate? My stance is that fights like this hurt boxing....do you not agree? I'm not saying fights like the Lewis ones mentioned (or Holy v Bean, Holmes) didn't do that same thing. But it's not 1999 right now, it's 2008 and Wlad is the guy at the helm of the division; not Lewis.
The sick thing is, and anyone who reads my posts will know how much this hurts, that if Lennox came back, he'd fucking MURDER anyone at HW right now. That's how bad it is...
I agree that the style of this fight doesn't help boxing. But I don't see it as a trend, or something that's happened with great regularity...at least with Klitschko. Ibragimov has to take some credit for the way this fight played out...he really didn't initiate much outside of some infrequent spots. If Klitschko starts fighting like this from rounds 1-12 his next several fights, it could be a problem.
If you are comparing Shane Mosley to Sultan Ibragimov, you need to contract AIDS. Its not about having a bum like Dempsey come back, its about having people actually FIGHT. Klitschko threw what, 20 power shots in 12 rounds. I brought up Lennox because even though he's similar in approach to Wlad now, he never ever fight like such a complete female as Wlad did. Wlad is a complete Beta, and the fact that he's the best we have right now is very, very sad.
