According to BTalk's George Kimball, it looks that way. The "short-list" is down to Gary Lockett and Marco Antonio Rubio and "HBO has expressed a preference for Lockett". "HBO has another reason for preferring Lockett: Since the 31 year-old from Cwmbran is trained by Enzo Calzaghe, a Pavlik-Lockett matchup might prime the pump for a more lucrative meeting down the road between Pavlik and Enzo’s son Joe, assuming the super-middleweight champion gets by Bernard Hopkins in their non-title fight in Las Vegas next month." "Should Lockett slide into the June 7 title fight, undefeated Irishman Andy Lee will likely face Rubio in the televised co-feature, in what would represent the first installment of a three-bout promotional arrangement Top Rank and Lee manager-trainer Emanuel Steward agreed to last week." "Less than an hour before Duddy entered the ring against Smichet on Feb. 23, Top rank and Irish Ropes had put the finishing touches on a contract that would have paid the Irishman $1,450,000 for a June 7 Pavlik fight"
He's been around for a while now.....he first made his name domestically at light middleweight as a big puncher He can hit, but technically he is limited and he marks up pretty easily....if he does survive a few rounds he'll look like a mess He is WBO #1 though, and as soft touches go, for that reason it makes more sense than picking anybody.....Lockett wont come to spoil, he'll come to win.....unless Pavlik gets silly, he won't have too much problem, and shouldn't look anything less than impressive
If you manage Duddy, you go into prevent defense big-time now. If he fights anyone with a pulse before getting that huge payday, his management should be shot. The problem is that Smichet seems like a reasonable chance (17-3-3(13)) and that almost was a disaster so maybe he ought to fight .500 fighters with no punch.
Pavlik-Lockett will be one sided but it'll be a bombs away war. I'd be content to see that match up.:blobbox:
Duddy wanted 2 million. Top rank wanted to give him 1.2. I'm guessing 1.4 was their counter to the 2. Duddy's probably crying himself to sleep right now.
Lockett has a habit of calling out the marquee fighters in his division, especially after he has just struggled badly with a domestic fighter. he has called out DLH and Trinidad before live on sky. he a bit of an idiot IMO.
I've heard of and in fact seen a reasonable amount of Gary Lockett. As Adamw rightly points out, he is the WBO No1 contender. That I suppose makes him a legitimate challenger of sorts, and he does hit pretty hard, is attack minded and will indeed come thinking he can win and KO Kelly. For all of that, he is pretty damn rubbish. He's sort of like 'Miranda-Lite'. His ranking is surely a false one, and if Kelly takes more than 5 rounds to dump Gary onto and through the canvas, I'd be most surprised. As for Duddy, well, don't even get me started. His last fight was very exciting and almost made up for the Wlad-Sultan snooze fest, but this was only because he continues to block hard, straight right hands with his face. He could easily have been stopped on cuts after 4 rounds against Walid (who is best described as 'limited'), and it's debatable whether or not he even did enough down the stretch to win the fight after falling behind early. He should have come crawling on his hands and knees for the Pavlik fight after that GARBAGE performance, never mind start banging on about $millions. What does he bring bar a decent fanbase? IMO, the answer is ZIP, and he's best kept well out of Kelly's way if he wants to keep that '0' intact. MTF
Duddy just got his ass handed to him by some scrub and was boo'd by his own fans. Hes also sliced up and out for at least 6 months. There is no way the fght was happening unless Pavlik wants to sit and wait for 6 months just to fight a dude everyone knows he will destroy. Lockett at least takes care of a mandatory.
