I raised this point a while back in another thread ( http://www.fightbeat.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23172&page=2 ).

HBO is trying to FORCE the public to be interested in a potentially moneymaking, high profile rematch between Wlad and Peters.

I think this is HBO's worst case of overhyping thus far... and that's saying a lot considering the kind of shameful overhyping they do on an almost regular basis.

Peter continues to look like nothing more than a big plodding, tentative, limited oaf in every fight (including last night's)... but don't tell that to HBO!

The whole HBO crew applauded Peter's stoppage of Maskaev like it was one of the greatest knockouts in heavyweight history. Never mind that BOTH fighters looked like absolute shit until the stoppage round... or that Maskav has lost EVERY other fight he ever lost by KO.

Lampley claims that Peter is "clearly the second best heavyweight in the world", and that anyone who is a boxing fan should be on pins and needles waiting for a rematch between him and Wlad.

Manny Steward's hype is especially shameful. He talks about crap like Peter's "improved defense" and "counterpunching skills".  Of course, it's obvious that Steward just wants to hype a Wlad-Peter rematch, so that his man get a high profile fight that he can almost certainly win easily.

IMO, if a network has even the SLIGHTEST hint of credibility and objectibility (which HBO clearly doesn't), it wouldn't even allow a guy like Manny to commentate a fight that he has some kind of stock in.

IMO, a rematch between Wlad and Peter is equivalent to the rematch between Wlad and Brewster... and maybe even LESS meaningful IMO, seeing as Peters never even beat Wlad in the first place. All Peter's "improved boxing ability" () means is that he'll just be even more tentative than he was in the first fight and get his ass outboxed even easier.

Also, I don't see what makes Peter so much "clearly" better than a lot of the other heavyweight "contenders" out there. Has he done anything to show that he's any better than Chagaev or even Ibragimov? Personally, I think either one of them would outbox Peter easily. In fact, I'm not even sure if he'd beat Valuev or even (dare I say it???) Ruiz. :dunno:

Telling it like it is on this subject I completely agree with your post. I thought I was watching a different fight than HBO last night. Peter looked like crap, maskaev was just worse.

A double KO would be my dream. Peter sucks, and talks too much, and Wlad fights like a pussy. My god the division is in bad shape.

In the era of Lewis, Tyson, Holy, and Bowe, neither Wladimira nor Peter would ever get a sniff at a belt.

IMO it's thanks to the giant heavyweights. They lose to the small guys, and actually beat the possible threats, so there's never a fully dominant champ. The title change hands so much that it's pathetic. I am really against massive heavyweights and would agree to a heavyweight limit, and a super hw division. Join the cruisers with the normal heavys and let the freaks fight each other. Hell, put the limit on height too

It was funny when Kellerman interviewed Peter I honestly couldn't understand some of his answers. I know he was emocional but he still didn't make too much sense.

I think even kellerman mentioned that he didn't understand one of his answers.

Peter sounds like an idiot when he tries to trash talk. I guess the fight was better than Wlad/Ibragimov as far as excitement and it ended with a KO so that's why many were praising the fight alltogether.

    Golota never won a title.:tease:

BTW - all of those guys were better than Peter, and McCall & Golota could have very well beaten Wladimira.

I almost started the same exact thread.

If anything, Peter-Maskaev gave the winner of Chagaev-Valuev II a MANDATE.

And I'd much rather see Klitschko fight either of Klitschko's mandatories (Thompson or Povetkin) than Peter.

And Kellerman completely changed courses during the telecast. Before the fight, he basically said a Maskaev win would mean more because Klitschko's already beaten Peter. Afterwards, Peter has a mandate.

Peter's ranking in the division should go DOWN after the fight.

Yeah, cos Wlad is soooo much worse than Bruce Seldon, Frank Bruno, Joe Hipp, 40 year old Tony Tucker, Vaughn Bean, Michael Moorer, Axel Schultz, Frans Botha and co.

Keep overrating the mid-late 90's. Really. Keep going.

    Absolutely agree, CH.

However - what makes you say this?

How was the Wlad-Brewster rematch not meaningful or shameful?

    Peace.

Morrison was so easy to hit he made Lennox look like a left-hooker.

And he found it almost impossible to get inside Lewis' jab...he'd have just as hard, if not a harder time, doing it against Klitschko's jab/hook.

Wlad was never brutally KO'd. Brutally KO'd means getting put to sleep and not making it back to your feet.

Lummox went after Tommy and walked him down, thus not giving him a chance to get off his hook. I dont see Wlad having the balls to employ the same strategy as Lewis. You'd have to make Wlad the favorite over Morrison, but I'd only make him a SLIGHT favorite. I could see Morrison getting knocked around by Wlad and getting up. But if Tommy got in just ONE good hook, Wladimira would be in need of smelling salts.
