Has there ever been a heavyweight PUNCHER with a faster right hand?

I watched Mike Tyson's fights from his prime and I think he is the quickest combination puncher ever from the heavyweight (Ali and Pattersn were probably quicker but not nearly as big punchers of course). However it seemed to me that not even Tyson fires his right hand as quickly as David Haye does. Haye ight or might not be succesful as a heavyweight among the modern guys but his speed is phenomenal.

Tyson was indeed the quickest combination puncher.

Everytime I see prime Tyson fights, it still surprised me.

The amazing thing is, he would throw a BLINDING combo, but instead of them being pitter pat flurries, say Ali or Leonard style, they were all power shots. Every single one of them was a PROPER power punch.

The funny thing is, his right hand was never especially fast. Contrary to most fighters, both his left and right hooks were faster than his straight right.

Haye's straight right is faster than Tyson's, but not as quick as his hooks.

Yeah he rivals Tyson for speed....whether he'll rival him for power I doubt. He's more a puncher on Patterson's level than Mike's I would guess.

Haye isn't anywhere NEAR as quick as Tyson. I actually don't think Haye has particularly quick hands.

    :notallthere: watch some tapes then

Haye's punches travel so quickly that they are difficult to see. Look at the right hand counter in his last fight that started the destruction of Enzo. Look at how he walked over Bonin. Of course, he was fighting scrubs, but his speed is unbelievable, especially considering his reach is much bigger than Tyson's

No, people are overrating his speed actually. His right hand IS fast, but not as fast as some people are making out. And the rest of his power punches, hooks, uppercuts etc, aren't particularly fast.

Just look at these Ugo, the speed is not even comparable. Tyson's hooks against Holmes are blazing, they are a literal blur, when he KOs Holmes. Then look at Haye's right hand against Mormeck. In comparison to Tyson's it looks significantly slower and more deliberate.

Compare the 2 one after the other...

    Haye - Mormeck

    Tyson - Holmes

It's not even close actually. Tyson's power punches were a blur. He was as quick as a flyweight.

IMO the clips you picked are not quite fair for comparsion. In the Mormeck fight Haye was tired and the shots he threw there he pretty much telegraphed as he was trying to put full force behind them all.

Here is a clip of the Bonin fight (after the first KD). As you can see, Bonin can't even react at all to the punches

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJJciMGe17k

and here is the Enzo fight. Look for example for the counter right hand at 5.10 mark

Haye has a very quick right hand for a big man, but he is not as quick as Mike was IMO.

It should be noted, of course, that Haye will probably look even quicker when he starts fighting bigger men than he has at CW. In comparison to the lumbering, oversized, hapless beasts he'll be fighting in due course, he'll look like lightning. With both hands...

But not a puncher in heqavyweight division, which is pretty much what this thread was about. Indeed Roid had supernatural speed in his muscles, for whatever the reason

Yep, his staight right is still nowhere near as fast as one of Tyson's hooks, at his peak. As fast as Tyson's own straight right, sure, but not even close to being as quick as a Tyson hook.

Like I said, they were a literal blur.

While he definitely isn't slow,....I think people are going overboard as to the speed of Haye's hands.

Herbie Hide in his prime was a waaaay faster handed puncher than David Haye could ever dream to be. Having said that...I look for Haye to make noise in the HW division.

A lot of it, again, has to do with the modern version of HW's.

Haye looks like a blur compared to these big, clumsy oafs. He wouldn't have looked so quick when Lewis, Tyson, Holyfield, Hide et al were campaigning.

And he is no faster handed than Wlad, Sultan, or Chambers.

I don't think it is that. To me his right cross looks exceptionally fast (even though otherwise he doesn't).

You do have a point there though, Haye who probably weights about 220 lbs is the size of BIG heavyweights of 1980s

I would agree with you on Wlad, but the other two are more contentious IMO. I also think that Haye hits harder, especially with the right hand, than Sultan certainly.

Don't get me wrong- his straight right is very quick regardless. I simply think he'll look more speedy overall when he is up against bigger, heavier and naturally more cumbersome guys at HW.

Last I heard he was taking a six month sabbatical to acclimatise to the additional weight. Nothing else has been decided, though he may try to rearrange the Rahman fight that was almost signed prior to the Enzo CW fight. :dunno:

Bob Arum was talking about Rahman fighting Tye Fields also.

    Haye-Fields would be fun:bears:

The only way Haye could like a blur to anyone, is if you've been drinking heavily before watching him fight. He is not really that quick at all.

His style however is that of a speed/reflex fighter and I guess thats enough for some people.

Yeah, not to mention Tyson's right to the body, then turned to a right uppercut. The speed of that combo is unmatched in any weight class!
