Two of the Bay Area’s rising talents will be on display this week as they attempt to take significant steps in their careers when they enter the ring Thursday night at the HP Pavilion in San Jose at the ‘American Metal & Iron Fight Night at the Tank’. In the ten round main event, 2004 Olympic gold medalist Andre Ward, Oakland, faces what should be the toughest test of his career against in former title challenger Rubin Williams while undefeated prospect Karim Mayfield, San Francisco, squares off against fellow unbeaten Francisco Santana in the six round co-feature. http://fightbeat.com/article_detail.php?AT=608
I was gonna go to it, but the people I usually go with to events are working late. I should be doing homework anyway. Fuck school. :dunno:
I read somwhere that the reason Andre Ward has developed so slow is because Goosen only wanted to get him fights where he was televised. That unless it was on TV, Ward wasn't gonna fight. that explains why in 4 years he's only fought 15 times. For a gold medal winner that is terrible. Even if he wasn't going to be a great pro he still should have been more active and probably would be better by now. It's crazy how guys like Andy Lee and Duddy are in the mix for a tittle fight before Ward.
I don't know that any of his fights between Kolle (on BAD) and Cantrell (Shobox) were televised. I don't believe any of them were...though HBO did show highlights of his KO of Diaz. He has been brought along slowly, partly due to some hand injuries, though it should be pointed out he's still just a few months older than Lee is. Ward is only 24 years old. I think he's a better prospect than Lee is.
talent wise he is better but the development is slower as a pro. I also think he has looked shaky on some of his performances.
