One of the great things about boxing is that it’s rich history, in combination with the theory that ‘styles make fights’, can often gives us insight into it’s future. For example – looking at Mayweather v Hatton (December 8th, 2007) we were able to look back to Leonard v Duran II (November 25th, 1980) and draw a conclusion based on history + style. For the upcoming “Pride of Walesâ€, the undefeated Joe Calzaghe (W 44 - KO 32, L 0) vs. Bernard “The Executioner†Hopkins (W 48 - KO 32, L 4 & D 1) taking place on April 19th, 2008 - we are actually able to peer just outside of the squared circle, and look at the history of another dynamic pair of combatants to draw our conclusion as to whom the winner will be – let’s look at: http://fightbeat.com/article_detail.php?AT=610
That was a trip. Well done and quite refreshing. ::  Though I'm not too sure Calzaghe will adopt that strategy...or that Hops will let him fully.
The difference is that Wile E. Coyote always made the mistake of fighting the Road Runner on the Road Runner's terms (ie: using Acme rockets packs to make him fly as fast as the Road Runner). Hopkins will make the fight on his own terms. Damn, I can't believe I just made a serious reply to that article. :eeeek:  ::
The article has some merit because it makes mention of Calzaghe's greatest asset against Hopkins, his amazingly quick feet. However, Calzaghe isn't a pot shot, run around type fighter. He throws combinations and stays in harms way long enough for Hopkins to maul, hold, hip-check and even counter punch. The article makes it seem as if Calzaghe is a runner. He absolutely is not. He offers great movement but it is almost always driven by an offensive mentality. If he changes that and does run, it's an easy fight. If not, Hopkins makes it close.
He's gunna have to chase Hopkins,.. I can see what Bernard's got planned a mile away, like Fraud, he doesn't give a fuck about entertaining the crowd, he's just gunna back up the whole fight, throwing a lead-right/clinch combination when Calzaghe comes near. Occasionally he'll mix up a few nut-busters and headclashes.
I’ve realised that I am flying to London on the 19........ where can I get to see the fight. Help needed?
