....he must move up again to 190lb and fight either David Haye (unlikely) or Enzo (WTF is it with all these Enzo's?) Maccaroni. The fact that he's feasted on a piss-poor 168 division for god-knows how many years (and it's still as piss-poor....HTF does hard-hitting Lucien Butte take 10 rounds to stop William Joppy??? :: ) and a solitary fight at 175lb against a 43-year old man....just doesn't cut it in my eyes. And he didnt even dominate the 43-year old man. :dunno: The 175lb division looks as bad, too: Tarver (shot, shot, shot - how can you not stop Clinton Woods????), Dawson (bum), Jones Jr (a 'name' only....a big name, granted, but come on!) Sorry - he has to to a RJJ and move up to take on the big-boys. opcorn:
He looked kinda pudgy with the extra weight, he's not big enough to have any advantages over someone like mormeck, let alone haye or bell. Anyway, the cruiser division doesn't pay a dime, so he'll never move up.
also.........RJJ didn't moved on and took on the big boys......he handpicked John Ruiz and as soon as people asked him to fight another HW, he ran back down to fight a former crack addict ::
Calzaghe's been killing himself to make 168 for a few years now - I didnt really see him as 'pudgy'...not for 7lb....I guess he just doesn't have good enough genetics? Calzaghe / RJJ - 5'11".
Calzaghe is Roy Jones. Both had one real world class operator in their weight class in their prime, Dariusz Michalczewski and Sven Ottke. Both fights were never made for various reasons. Both Jones and Calzaghe have three standout fights (Hopkins/Kessler/Eubank) and (Hopkins/Toney/Tarver) wrapped around a lot fights against good (Griffin/Harding/Hill/Reid/Woodhall), mediocre (Lacy/Mitchell/Ruiz/Woods/Veit) to crap (Telesco/Frazier/Jimenez/Sobot) opposition.
Very well put:bears: Apart from Jones being the most gifted (and prime for prime the best) fighter ever and Calzaghe being "only" pretty damn good their careers have been similar in many ways
Calzaghe is better than Hopkins, better than any 'version' of that overrated eye-searer you can pick out selectively against any of his undersized mandatory scrub opposition infact , -------but Roy Jones is extremely great, and spectacular at his peak, top 5 p4p best ever, 116 - 112 to Roy, I'd say if they both fought each other during thier physical primes, Calzaghe will never surpass Roy on a greatness scale, but that's nothing to be ashamed of.
he beat both lacy and kessler in two super middleweight fights that actaully mattered. he then beat hopkins who was considered the top dog at light heavyweight. what should he do? go up to crusier and beat david haye?
Sure he's stepped up as of late, but thats 3 fights out of 45? And if he wanted to fight Haye he'd have to go higher than cruiserweight.
This is very well put. Here's where I'd argue, though, or at least distinguish: Ottke isn't anywhere near the threat that Michalzsewski was, nor was there near as big a demand for Calz/Ottke as there was for Jones/Michalz. Calz never lost any of his standout fights or good opponent fights (which is where I'd throw Johnson for Roy). That's two big ones in favor of Joe. Joe never beat a reigning heavyweight world champ. That's one huge one in favor of Roy.
Eubank was another good win, but I mean,.. Hopkins, who is bigger than all bar a couple of supermiddleweights, fought Tito at 160,..and god forbid,... De La Hoya...at 160...and Winky at Light-heavyweight!, .. basically, Hopkins best win is ...over Antonio Tarver...... better late than never...I guess
