Ellerbe cites poor television ratings (on HBO) for Cotto's recent defense of the WBA welterweight title against Alfonso Gomez. He does feel Cotto is good fighter who improves with each passing fight. "I think Cotto is a good fighter who's definitely improving," Ellerbe said. "His promotional company (Top Rank) has done a good job in getting the right type of fights to increase his visibility. But he's still not there yet. The numbers don't lie. If nobody's watching him as evidenced by the ratings, what makes him important? I'm not saying he's a bad fighter. He's a good fighter. But he's obviously not on Floyd's level because nobody's watching." He later told the paper that Floyd had to fight hard for nine years in order to land his first pay-per-view headliner (Arturo Gatti), and next time he decides to fight - it's going to be based on legacy and money. "It took Floyd nine years to get on pay-per-view," Ellerbe said. "When Floyd steps into the ring, it's going to be about legacy and economics. He's in control of what's going on and if those two things aren't happening, Floyd's not going to be part of that." </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE> It's official, PBF wants nothing to do with Cotto. :flip:
Hes just saying what hes gotta say. If Cotto wasn't important he wouldn't have been spitting his name. It's just a case of when Cotto leaves Arum the fight will be on.
Floyd is now a businessman. It's unfortunate. At only 30 years old and many years left in the sport, he's already finished taking challenges and now wants to f*ck around doing fake pro wrestling and dancing with the stars. That's all good and all cause he makes nice money from it, but if he thinks he's gonna become anything more than a 'boxer', he's wrong. He needs to stick to boxing and take the toughest challenges. And a rematch with Oscar will not come close to 2 million ppv buys this time, not after the piss poor first fight.::
Don't get your hopes up that it won't do the numbers. I still remember everybody on here saying they wouldn't order another Mayweather PPV again after the Baldomomir fight. In his next fight he broke the record then done 850,000 against a guy making his PPV debut. When Floyd Jr and Floyd Sr start beefing on 24/7 this fight will do great numbers again.
He's saying Cotto isn't 'popular' enough, which leaves virtually only De La Hoya left who is "worthy of Floyd's time" apparently , ...this is terrific news for boxing fans. :shit:
Yeah, it does suck. And as much as I admire Cotto for being a quiet guy who lets his fists do the talking I wish he would make an exception and call Floyd out.
hahaha...BULL SHIT. Replace Cotto with Floyd in that fight and go up against the far more competitive Showtime card that night (dawson/johnson; tarver/woods) and I would suspect the results would be similar.
Who cares. Team Mayweather are known for contradicting themselves. If Cotto really wasn't important then Elerbee wouldn't have even mentioned his name. As for the numbers IMO hes letting Cotto sweat his oppurtunity and hes just doing what De la Hoya done to him when Floyd wanted to fight Oscar. Hes just letting Cotto know who is the man and who will get the bigger money split when the fight happens.
PBF has come a long ways in terms of popularity since that punching bag. And Gatti was a hell of a lot more popular than Cotto.
It's Amazing how Floyd Naysayers PICK & CHOOSE what to Believe Out of him... As a FAN of Floyd, even REED can Admit that 99% of what Dude Says is BULLSHIT...REED Doesn't PICK or CHOOSE what to Believe Out of Floyd, Cause MOST of it is Bullshit...Naysayers Should Do LIKEWISE as Opposed to Getting Bent Out of Shape & ASSuming he's TRUTHFUL about Not Fighting Cotto.... Floyd Used that "What has he Done, How Many PPV's has he Headlined" Train of Thought PRIOR to Facing Baldomir AND Hatton...There was a Time when Floyd Said he DIDN'T Need EITHER of those Guys for that SAME Reason... Yet Floyd Ended Up Facing BOTH of them, Didn't He???... Bottom Line, Floyd Mayweather WILL FIGHT Miguel Cotto...By MID 2009 @ the Absolute LATEST... REED
Fuck Floyd! Who does he think he is DelaHoya? He isn't and he'll never be the draw Oscar was and still is. His recent PPV success has everything to do with who he fought. Floyd himself was not the draw, Hatton and Mayweather are bigger in terms of drawing power than Floyd is. Floyd is a disgrace to the sport.
U Make it Seem like DeLa was "a Draw" from Day 1... Even w/a Gold Medal, it Took TIME, Fighting on the Right Undercards & Fighting the Right OPPONENTS To Make Dela a "Draw"... When DeLa Fought Chavez, NOBODY Tuned in to See DeLa...Yet that Fight did GOOD Business... U're Right, Floyd WILL NEVER B DeLa, but he Can Certainly Follow the DeLa BLUEPRINT to Reap some DeLaESQUE Financial Rewards... Like it or Not, Floyd has Made some BRILLIANT Business Moves N the Last Couple Years...Fighting Baldomir for 8 mil & the Linear Title, Fighting DeLa N the Biggest PPV EVER, Going On "Dancing w/the Stars" to Build on the Notoriety he Got from the DeLa Fight, Fighting Hatton N ANOTHER MEGA PPV Fight, then Getting 7 Figures (@ Least) for ACTING like he was Fighting Big Show... It Takes TWO to make a HUGE PPV...DeLa's Two Biggest R w/Tito & Floyd...Why, Cause those OPPONENTS Brought SOMETHING to the Table as Well... REED
yes, but he is nowhere near as good as Cotto. If Mayweather wants to cement his legacy, instead of packing his pockets, he should fight the winner of Margarito/Cotto. That fight is much more meaningful than a rematch with ODLH. Or a fight with Pacquiao.
Floyd made a lot of money lately, I'll give him that. Good for him. As a fan of BOXING that doesn't do shit for me. What I want to see is the so called best fighter in the world fight the best fighters. Is Floyd doing that? Does he plan on doing that? I don't think so. Much Like Fedor in MMA, to keep your status as the best you must continue to prove you are the best. Floyd is not doing that by fighting Oscar or Hatton again. They are not the best fighters floyd could be facing and nobody can deny that.
Not so sure about that. Would thousands of fans cross the pond to go see Floyd fight in England? Very doubtful.
I want to see the Cotto fight as well, but assuming Cotto is a tougher fight than Oscar is just that, an assumption. Hindsight may prove that ODLH was a much tougher opponent for Floyd.
Hatton invokes a certain amount of passion with his fans. The type of passion that would lead them to travel across the pond to watch him fight. But, in general, is a Hatton a bigger draw? I would say no. And, would Hatton's fans have traveled so far if his opponent was not PBF? I would say no again.
