Spinks would have little to fear from Calzaghe's slappy punches, ESPECIALLY at Light-heavy. The fight would look competitive for the first few rounds as many of the slow-starting Spinks' title defenses did, but Spinks would eventually start to fight and take over. Spinks by TKO around round 8 or 9.
That's a good analogy. Johnson was landing more punches and was ahead in the fight when Spinks turned the fight in his favor. I can see Calzaghe doing the same for a while until Spinks starts landing his power shots.
If Hopkins and his 43 year old right hand were able to tag and drop Calzaghe, the 'jinx' might leave Joe in a vegetative state. Spinks is a guy that had answers for the work rate of Qawi and the power of Johnson. And against Spinks, Calzaghe would be the significantly smaller man. No contest.
If Mitchell & Hopkins can put Joe on his ass with right hands, Spinks would put him to sleep! Calz has a good chin, but its not iron. And few light heavys in history had power like Spinks.
Forget win, anybody who picks Calz to last the distance is smokin! Mike would take him out in under 6 rounds. Spinks fought cautious against guys who's power he respected(like Qawi and Eddie MM), but against slapping ass Joe... Spinks would show no respect. Spinks just overpowers Calzaghe in every way. Bigger, stronger, WAAAAY more powerful, more accurate, more skilled, better defense, better everything. Its a borderline mismatch. I wouldnt pick Calz over Eddie Mustafa, let alone Spinks.
Calz would get the shit kicked outta him by Qawi, let alone Spinks. I'm not sure I'd even pick Calz over Johnson or Yauqi Lopez.
Really? You think Spinks vs. Lacy is a close or even fight? Frankly, I can't think of one advantage that Lacy would have over Spinks. Not even punching power, which is probably Lacy's best attribute.
My post was just a useless addition to a useless topic:: For what we have seen of Calzaghe so far there is nothing that really suggests he could beat the vastly bigger guy here. Still these "3 rounds max" posts are as ridiculous
agREED. I don't see any way that Calzaghe has a chance of beating Spinks, but Spinks often started slowly in this title fights (even against average at best punchers like Johnny Davis and Murray Sutherland) and I definately can see Calzaghe doing ok and landing more punches for the first few rounds while Spinks is feeling him out. But I get the feeling that once Spinks really begins to fight and starts finding a home for the "Spinks Jinx", the fight will turn in his favor for good.
Spinks would win and could possibly stop Calzaghe late...but how the hell is anyone going to dominate Calzaghe and/or stop him in 3 rounds? Y'all act as though Calzaghe is some club fighter...
