From the L.A. Times: Also in attendance Wednesday afternoon was Jaime Quintana, manager of super-bantamweight Rafael Marquez. Quintana said negotiations are in progress to schedule a fourth consecutive fight following the epic trilogy between Marquez and World Boxing Council champion Israel Vazquez of Huntington Park. Vazquez defeated Marquez by split decision in March at Home Depot Center's tennis stadium, his second consecutive victory in the series. Quintana said Staples Center could host the bout, and current talks are ongoing about the date. Marquez would be ready to go in November or December, Quintana said, but Vazquez wants to return in January or February.
I guess 2.5 million for both would be ok, since it's Showtime boxing, and they can't put on a profitable card if it's not Tyson in there.
If this fight happens, Vasquez has no case for being a P4P entrant. You can't be such a fighter by proving you're better than a whole ONE 122 pounder.
He could fight Rafael 10 times in a row, and he would still be top 5 P4P if he won most of them :tease:
As much as I enjoyed this trilogy, its not like either (or just Vazquez) had confirmed himself definitively as #1 at the weight prior to their matchup and three successive fights against the same fella (who has no wins at the weight himself) doesn't change that...I think there are a few 122IBers who I'd give a decent shot of beating Marquez..
i doubt vasquez nor marquez gives a fuck about p4p rankings at this point. especially marquez, who will be entering his mid 30s soon and needs to make the most money he can before he retires. vasquez has established himself as one of the better 122 pounders of all time. he owns two wins over Larios (probably the other best 122 pounder post barrera and morales) and two wins over marquez. in the end, it all comes to $. i honestly dont care to see another marquez fight, but i'd probably do the same if i were vasquez rather than fighting someone like caballero and make less money and possibly lose in the process. by 2009, if vasquez is still on his winning streak, he can hope for de leon to remain as a title holder and have a unification bout.
caballero has a very good chance of beating just about anyone at 122. he looked like shit vs. lacierva, but no one hardly ever looks good against that guy. he looked good taking de leon to school and beating up jl castillo's little brother.
It's true, he got a gift over lacierva, and he's never looked impressive in any fight I've seen him in. He's a lanky, awkward big issue seller of a boxer, a total overachiever. He's really, really tall for a 122 pounder, and that's about it. Little Izzy would smash him.
Lacierva won that fight 8 rounds to 4, I don't know what fight these ringsiders were watching. Were they the same ones that had Marge beating Williams and Hopkins winning all 12 rounds Vs Calzaghe?
well i guess you're in the minority there. doesnt matter tho, it's not like vasquez vs. caballero will ever happen.
I thought Al Bernstein, in particular, as well as Steve Albert were sipping a little kool-aid during that fight. Not sure if it's because Lacierva was a GSP fighter or not, though sometimes it seems like they lean that way.
