Correctamundo. No Country for Old Men had no motion picture score whatsoever.

Which was one of the best things about the film. It held your attention without flimsy and uneccessay tunes. NCFOM was a good movie. Very good. It's beginning to get rubbished for little reason.

actually, you're right. because i was trying to remember what it was like, but i guess it didnt. haha.

i expected a lot out of no country's plot, and it was very good but got shitty towards the end.

i know it's exactly the same as the book (which i havent read), but if that's the case, maybe the book just isn't very good?

None ever said it was a bad movie... its not. I give it a 7.5 which isnt bad at all. I just disagree with the MANY people that think its a GREAT movie.

There Will Be Blood is better. Better all around acting, and MUCH better ending.

no country is a pitch-perfect thriller. the pick-up truck silhouette appearing on the horizon, josh brolin waiting on the hotel bed listening to footsteps, bardem's conversation at the gas station ("... you married into it?"). brilliant.

Arlington Road is on right now. I'm watchin it for like the 8th time. I love this movie! One of the best suspense movies of the last 15 years in all honest. 9/10.

I loved that film, for the simple reason that finally evil triumphs over good.

Obviously I'd heard a great deal about this, so I had a pre-concieved idea going in, of how good this should be. It was actually not what I expected in the end (never saw a preview for it really) and I was pleasantly suprised with it.

The characters work together fantastically, IMO and the dialogue is enjoyable throughout,

    A fine movie.

    8/10

i thought that movie was flat and clumsily gratuitous. "let's make, like, the ultimate dysfunctional family!", but with no human reality. just hackneyed cliches, each character showing off his/her gimmick. the dad is a paper-thin bad guy - from the moment he speaks at the dinner table, it's clear what's going to happen with him. carell parades his wrist-bandages, and then nothing happens. they make a granddad that swears and takes hard drugs - and that's it. they're like WWE pantomime characters, they have like one catchphrase and they're done.

the plot developments roll along with a predictable "clunk", everybody learns a spiritual lesson - but the lessons have little relation to what life is actually like.

you say there's good dialogue. like what? "does anyone realise that i'm the preeminent proust scholar in the country?" - a line the director found so funny he left it in there twice?

how did the mute son realise that the girl's performance was going to be bad? where did that come from?

and the whole beauty pageant satire was ripped from donnie darko's sparkle motion.

i mostly go with the critical consensus, but they fucked up on this one - it was contrived and unreal, a fake attempt at an "independent"-style movie. just purporting to "subvert stereotypes" isn't enough to make a good movie - you have to subvert them in a way that is actually true and heartfelt. this just replaces stereotype with a new stereotype.

Good post. I don't agree with any of it, but that you felt strongly enough and thought enough about the film means that you're not a moron.

I liked it to. I also don't have the heart to debate why I liked it with Rooster.

Rooster, you set the bar too high and people won't want to converse with you anymore because of feelings of inadequacy. :nono:

No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood

I've seen these two Best Picture candidates (most people will agree, probably the #1 and #2 best movies of last year) within the last few months, and here are my thoughts on them.

Both were visually and technically superb.

No Country was an excellent action/suspense movie for the first three-quarters of it, and that first three-quarters was better than the first three-quarters of There Will Be Blood, or probably any other movie last year.

    BUT...

I can't shake off the disappointment of the ending. I think the Coens ultimately tried too hard to be unconventional with this movie, and I'd say the same artiness and risk-taking that made this movie (and others of their movies) great up to that point, almost undid it in the end.

There Will Be Blood is sort of a matter of taste... I liked it, but I can easily see how someone else wouldn't. Personally, I liked its atmospheric effects, especially in the first 15 or 20 minutes (which featured no talking), and the music. I also really liked the oil fire scene, and the ending, which may be the single most shocking, jaw-dropping ending I have ever seen (:eeeek:). IMO, however, the dialogue and character development couldn't used a little more work.

Although No Country may have been more tense and entertaining for much of it... in the end, I'd have to say TWBB is the better movie, because it has a much better ending. Also, it has the more memorable lines, which may become iconic one day (ie: "Draaaaaaiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnaaageee!!!", and "I... drink... your... MILKSHAKE!!")

I think a mistake in both movies may have been that both were intended to be deep and thoughtful, but (particularly in No Country) it wasn't made clear what the audience should have been focusing on, and so when those ideas came to the fore at the end, they seemed to come on somewhat suddenly and out of nowhere.

Because both movies are arty and somewhat unconventional (particularly TWBB), I'd recommend every person see them at least once, and enjoy what they can of them and make up their own minds about them.

Personally, I give No Country a 7/10 (the first three-quarters gets a 10/10, and makes the movie as a whole worth seeing).

As for TWBB, I give it somwhere around a 8.5/10, though my opinion could go up or down a bit depending on when I can see it a second time in its entirety.

I only saw it once (not too long after it came out), but I thought it was excellent... especially the ending, which was bone-chilling as hell.

Every time I've recommended it to someone else, they have the same reaction.

I wonder how bone-chilling it must feel now, after 9/11? (although the movie really was already modeled after the Oklahoma City bombing) :dunno: :eeeek:

Agreed on the first count for sure.

TLJ's character was totally pointless, and NO WAY did he deserve an Oscar nomination for that.

As for the bad guy... well, IMO, those things you describe are easier said than done. When trying to be a creepy villain, it's easy to go over the top, or look silly or cliched. Beeing effectively creepy is a subtly difficult art IMO.

Having said that, I can see how you could question his being considered a surefire Oscar winner. IMO, Paul Dano from There Will Be Blood may have been just as deserving of it.

Watching the ending of 12 Monkeys now.

One of the best sci-fi movies ever IMO. A little long, but very poignant and well-crafted. Terry Gilliam's masterpiece.

The strange part is, the ending is actually revealed straightaway, and the real mystery is how the movie comes to reach the ending.

Yeah. Arlington Road easily has one of the best endings of all time. Its right up there with the ending of Usual Suspects IMO. Tim Robbins is such an underrated actor. The man is a genius.

And I LOVED the ending of There Will Be Blood! That shit was badass!:bears:

The Rock is about to come on soon. Ive seen it before, but I'll probably watch it again. Its one of the better action movies of the 90's, and one of the better Nicholas Cage movies period, but mainly the movie is carried by Sean Connery and Ed Harris. But still, its a highly enjoyable movie. 8/10.

I'm in the minority, but I actually think Gone Baby Gone was the best movie of 07. Its a CRIME that it wasnt even NOMINATED!

There Will Be Blood was second best, and NCFOM is 3rd.

Most overrated movie of 07 either goes to The Kingdom or American Gangster. Both movies got alot of hype and failed to deliver.

I can understand why. But I enjoy it for some reason. Its not meant to be a quality movie, but for an action movie its very good.

Speaking of 90's action movies.... Broken Arrow was on today. Crap movie! Christian Slater is one of the most annoying little turds to ever step on the big screen.
