185 is middleweight, 170 is welterweight. Just the same as 147 in boxing is welterweight, and 160 is middleweight. If a welterweight boxer came in at 149 for a scheduled WW fight, you wouldn't think he was planning on fighting Kelly Pavlik would you? Alves fights at welterweight, 170, therefore he is almost certainly gunning for Pierre.
I agree with Tprsec, it's inexcusable for a young guy not making weight on the biggest fight of his career, still, I'm glad he beat the octopus Hughes badly, never a fighter frustrated me at the no kicking ( on the face ) of a grounded opponent rule more than Hughes did.
Here's Matt Hughes getting clowned by Alves. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5pa69_hughes-vs-alves-ufc-85_sport
They both took it on the same short notice. Alves was HUGE, his not making weight seemed like a huge advantage to me. He was just plain bigger and stronger than Hughes. The Vera stoppage was BS. Nate Marquart got robbed by the shitty ass ref.
agreed, but wasn't the pile driver illegal too? Should have taken a point for that, not the back of the head.
That was an even fight until Nate kneed him in the head - that gave Nate an unfair advantage in the later rounds.
I have never heard that, but it's not as if you see a pile driver every day. :: I just looked up the rules and it's illegal to spike an opponent to the canvas on his head or neck. What I don't get is I have seen several KO slams. Has this always been a rule? Matt Hughes vs Carlos Newton was a KO slam and he damn sure was KO'd because he landed on the head and neck.
