Fightbeat has just received information that 2008 Boxing Hall of Fame Inductee Larry Holmes was involved in a heated argument with Ed Brophy of the Boxing Hall of Fame. Holmes was then asked to leave the premises and not to return for the induction ceremonies. http://fightbeat.com/news_details.php?NW=21633
I wish he would have laid that dude out. Larry is probably Top 3 greatest of all-time. Show some respect
I was there. Larry is my favorite all-time Heavyweight but he was a cunt who made a huge ass of himself and pissed off a lot of fans.
It was insane. I can't believe the balls on Larry. Guys like Trinidad, De La Hoya, George Foreman, Sugar Ray Leonard and even Hagler (as much of a prick as I've heard he can be) go up on a regular basis and are cordial with the fans. Bernard Hopkins was great the couple times he was up there. No wonder Larry is still rich. He was basically extorting money from the fans to sign for them, take his picture and buy his shit. :: It's one thing if he had set up his own booth on the grounds somewhere away from the show to sell his book or something like Joe Frazier used to do, but he pretty much busted into the collectibles show at noon, plopped his own table in front of a bunch of memorabilia dealers and just feet away from guys like Michael Carbajal, Emile Griffith, Marlon Starling and others were signing autographs for free. A huge line formed because Larry didn't show for any of the previous events that weekend and the fans wanted his autograph as he was really the only name guy there getting inducted. They thought he was a freebie like everybody else but when they got up to him he would tell them they needed to buy something off his table to sign or pay him 25 bucks. Now, I have nothing against an athlete selling their autograph to make a few extra bucks, but that was the absolute wrong time and the wrong place. Larry was basically giving a big fuck you to the fans, the other fighters next to him who were signing for free, the memorabilia dealers (including myself) he plopped down in front of, cock-blocking us from paying customers for nearly an hour while fans who thought they were waiting for a free autograph were blocking off our tables. Larry was being nothing but a self-serving douche. This wasn't Larry standing up to the man like he supposedly did with Don King and being some sort of fictional hero. Larry was looking out for Larry and no one else. Larry don't give a shit about boxers pensions or any of that shit and is only another example of the modern athlete who has no problem collecting money from the fans while shitting on them the first chance he has to give something back. :shit:
REED Can See BOTH Sides of this... On 1 Hand, it's SHITTY that the IBHOF Milks the NAME of Guys they're Inducting, w/Out PAYING them a Dime of it...Why SHOULD a Fighter Sign an Autograph & ALLOW the IBHOF to Get ALL of the Proceeds???.... On the Other Hand, Guys like Holmes, who Made a CAREER Out of BITCHING about a Lack of Recognition, Shouldn't Be an ASSHOLE when he's Actually Being HONORED... REED:hammert:
Is anyone really surprised at Holmes' behavior?? He's been acting like this since the 70's. What would be really surprising is a story in which Holmes didn't act like an ass.
It looks like Holmes did stick around and gave a speech at the induction ceremony the next day. I had already left by then but had heard rumors he wasn't going to show for it. http://www.fightnews.com/newman72.htm
