We can not relegate such a fantastic video to simple MM forum use. This video, is what I'll go ahead and call undeniable proof of the evolution of boxing technique. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xm8Y-pWzIg&feature=related
That's great Jaws, now why don't you create a similarly fantastic video showing Joe Louis knocking out Abe Simon, Buddy Baer or Primo Carnera while complementing it with a clip of John Ruiz shadowboxing in a cod piece. :bears:
Those old-timers had plenty of lost skills that the new generation does not know. You just need to look for the right things..:bears:
while you are clearly kidding, this is a terrible analogy. Any version of Cuevas or Duran are 1000 times better fighters than Abe Simon, Buddy Baer, Primo Carnera. John Ruiz would wipe his ass with anyone Joe Louis fought, and that speaks wonders.
Yes, because he does so many things better then those guys. Like hump, and clinch and sexually violate. :bears:
That is very true. Back in Louis' days trainers knew only one "correct" boxing technique and tactics. Even now there are boxing people who think that there is a "right" boxing technique and everything that differs from it is wrong. Ruiz' style is not correct nor beautiful to watch but in a boxing fight he would beat Joe Louis if those two ever met one on one. And I say that as a Louis fan. Louis' skills were marvellous for his time
OK Ugotabe. What does John Ruiz do better then Louis? trainers only taught "one" boxing technique? You're insane. You guys ever hear of Ray Arcel, Freddie Brown? The same fuckin' guys who were top trainers in Louis's day were working in Roberto Durans and Larry Holmes corners in the 80's.
Ruiz is able to make the opponent fight his fight better than most fighters in the history. He has beaten a whole bunch of guys who had the more correct boxing techniue compared to him. He is able to prevent his opponent from landing punches and he sneaks in his own to capture points. I think Louis, as most, would have considerable trouble wrestling with him up close (yes he fought a coule of big guys but they didnt fight the way Ruiz does and were a mucn more open target). Louis would have a chance though since Ruiz has had trouble with quick guys who can time him and Louis did that particularly well for his time. But, it is much more easy to look like the sharp-shooter Louis appeared to be when you fight guys that have not seen the techniques before
Would Sergei Kobozev also beat Joe Louis? Ruiz's tactics tended to work best against comparably sized, slow, overweight heavies. Fighters with great timing, speed, accuracy with their punches could hit him cleanly as he came in.
True, and Louis' tactics worked against cruiserweights (which he pretty much was himself) and couple of big clumsy fellows
I stilll think they must have cheated. No KO punch can make such a perfect sound like the right hand Hearns connected with on Duran´s jaw. ::
my post in mm  Greb was only stopped a couple times out of 299 fights :dunno: and not sure what footage of Hearns against a lightweight and welterweight has to do with him fighting a middleweight (the division where he was ko'd in 3 rounds twice) :dunno: Greb KO 3 <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->
dsimon writes: I love how Jaws puts something up that is legitimately provocative...in a good way, because it does make a point. and then the idiot start braying. The John Ruiz comparison is beyond stupid. The notions about Louis equally so. Gene Fullmer was another one who looked like a palooka. His technique was, well it didn't exist... yet he beat Robinson who looks flawless on film. Grebb was a weird one, He was a windmiller. Its a good point Jaws, Grebb indeed looks like shit on film. But a lot of what these guys did and what great fighters continue to do today cannot be captured on film!
Greb had 48 stoppage wins in over 300 fights...that doesn't say much for him as a puncher. So I don't buy into the notion that he stops Hearns early or at all. Watching that video clip...Greb's skill level looks to be on a par with Fred Sanford. And I'm not even talking about a PRIME Sanford since there is no footage available of Fred in his prime. A more realistic scenario is Hearns drops Greb 46 times and the fight is stopped to save Greb's life. The only way Greb stops Hearns is if he is allowed to hit Hearns in the head with a bottle of Gin.
