One of boxing's mantras is that a good chin beats a good punch. What are some examples of big hitters getting defused by great chins? What are some examples in which the good punch gets the better of the good chin.
The former yes, the latter no. Trindad was not much of a puncher at 160 and sans cement wraps. Arguello/Pryor: although Arguello was not as much as a puncher at 140 Margarito/Cotto Maussa/Vivian Harris(spelled correctly) although to be fair it was good chin, beats good punch and no chin, heart or stamina. :::: At 140, Vivian could crack. Phillips/Tzsyu: Phillips had a beard that night. That fight is very much underappreciated and underrated. Phillips walked through hell and broke Kt's will.
Hearns/Leonard 1. Gay Ray was getting served but his chin and skill kept him afloat. He was able to take all Hearns had and then stop him.
For punch beats chin: Foreman-Chuvalo Graziano-Zale II Robinson-Fullmer II Chin beats pucher: Tons of Matthew Saad Muhhamad fights. He made a habit of it.
A great example of punch beating chin is Rodrigo Valdez stretching Bennie Briscoe in thier 2nd fight.
Brilliant, you reject my suggestion, only to supply a similar selection in your very first example ::
Brewster's chin was something else in the first Wlad fight, he had to take that heavy sh*t from Wlad for round after round till Wlad finally gassed out. Chin beat the punch that night. Although Wlad's stamina was kinda suspect too.
Ali-Foreman was the first example that sprang to mind of a 'chin beats punch'. Also: Watson-Benn Eubank-Benn Thompson-Haye MTF
That was the first to come to mind. Cobb took some bombs. Hagler-Hearns. Hearns at 160 could still crack (it looked like Shuler was killed from that right hand), but Hagler took the better shot.
Ones that I have not seen mentioned: <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o> </o> Chin beats punch: <o> </o> Barkley-Hearns Margarito-Cintron <o> </o> <o> </o> Punch beats chin: <o> </o> Rosario-Bramble Bob Foster-Henry Hank Foster-Tiger Foster-Quarry Hearns-Duran Nunn-Kalambay (flukish but still)
Good example, I remember the HBO crew saying the fight should be stopped and Brewster came back and laid Wlad out.
Laid Wlad out? :: More like Wlad was a dead man walking coming into the 5th. He was so tired from tee'ing off on Brewster he could barely stand. Wlad gassed, he was not even close to "Laid out" That was the luckiest day of Brewster's life.
That fight sort of reminded me of David Izon-Derrick Jefferson. Izon was getting beat up so bad, even Larry Merchant was calling for a stoppage. Edit: I just noticed that Mitchell mentioned this fight already.
