Great job by Marquez, I thought Casa would be too big but I was wrong. Marquez is a monster. I'm very impressed.

 

casamayor is in his fucking 40s and it aint like he's lived a pristine hopkins-esque life. still surprised he was stopped! credit is due to rubberhead mikE for his prediction

 

It's just that Casa is old. I predicted a 8th round TKO for Marquez, but Casa hung around vailiantly.

 

Sure, but he's still a top ranked fighter that never got stopped before. Marquez dominated him and stopped him in his first fight at 135. Pretty good victory IMO.

 

Very good victory. I was confident Marquez would win (because he is he better technician and better overall fighter ;)) and I really didn't think he would stop Hole, especially in his first fight at 135.

Gay Marquez is now the man to beat at lightweight. Manny and Juan would both smash Diaz and the rest of them. Cue the rubbermatch. Well, actually just the 3rd fight :kidcool:

 

Casa's 37 years old, not "in his 40's." He isn't what he was in his prime, but neither is he as faded as some people make him out to be, I think.

And frankly, he looked as good as I've seen him in a loooong time. His punches never got wide and looping and slow, he kept up his workrate, rarely held, and actually put together combinations and had a good jab.

Marquez allowed Casa to fight at his best pace...still didn't work.

That was a beautiful right hand right on the point of the chin in that first KD though.

lots of people know he is older than advertised. partying hasn't helped, neither did 400 am fights. he's a tough and tricky fighter, about a decade past his best.

 

i'm happy for marquez, who finally gets an emphatic win over a great fighter (although he's old, and so is marquez himself).

 

People are forgetting Marquez is actually 35.

And I tell you what, Marquez looked as sharp as he ever has.

Casamayor too, people can go on about Santa Cruz and Katsidis, but this was clearly a better version of Hole that GMM just busted up. I was surprised in the first 4 rounds actually, he looked faster and sharper than I've seen him look in quite a long time.

Two things I found interesting about the fight. First, as I said last night, Marquez really had no respect for Hole's power, and this was his first fight at 135 too. Hole never hurt Marquez at all.

At just goes to show how fucking hard Pacman can punch.

And, Hole has a reputation of being a skilled boxer, good technician, slick etc - albeit very dirty. Compared to GMM he actually looked pretty basic, relying on the left cross counter over and over.

It goes to show what a complete, high level technician GMM really is.

Until proven otherwise, I don't believe this bullshit about Casa being in his 40's. In the 1989 World Junior Championships, was he actually 25? ::

It was an excellent fight, goood skills and also intelligence shown by both sides. Marquez was physically clearly the better guy, sharper and faster, but past-prime Casamayor with his craft and smarts made a fight out of it.

And you were wrong Ugo, Casa looked almost basic next to a high end technician like Gay Marquez :mj:

JMM surely had greater variety of punches, in fact, he might have the best variety in the world. His uppercuts and combos mixing shts to head and body were beautiful. Casa couldn't get through with that many kind of shots but he showed skills too in being able to slip his counters in there and side-stepping JMM quite often. I thought Marquez was up 6-4 (or 7-3) coming to 11th

 

I don't know if it's true, but I've just read that at the time of the stoppage, 1 judge had Casamayor ahead and the two others had it even! :notallthere:

I had the same score, 7-3.

Casamayor won rounds 1, 4, and I forget which other.

Every other round was pretty clear for Marquez.

Baron - I heard 2 had it even, and the third had GMM ahead.

I can't believe they even had it even, that's preposterous. Even arrogant little Hole himself surely knew he was losing. He was being outboxed and outlanded in almost every round.

Judging is really beginning to irritate me these days.

 

Well, that would be more logic. Still, It amazes me too that anyone could see it as an even fight after 10. There's something about Casamayor's style that really seems to please the judges.

 

I'm very happy to be wrong with my prediction. I didn't see the fight though, so I'll have to catch that. Good times opcorn:

It is a known fact however that fight looks different from the ringside compared to TV. Seeing the fight from tv tends to favor the fighter who lands the cleaner shots while scoring from ringside favors the guy who punches harder. The effect of a blow is one thing that TV never shows correctly

 

That's not true. You can hear the thuds on TV, see the fighter's head snap back, and of course see if he is stunned. Marquez looked like the harder puncher.

GMM just shrugged off Hole's straight lefts, they had almost no effect, even when they landed flush.

That is not what I meant. Of course clear hard shots are visible in TV also, but the difference between "regular" shots is the one you can't see through TV. I have noticed this plenty of times when I have talked with guys who have been on ringside in fights I watch from TV and vice versa. There is a difference, I don't know why.

I am not saying it would explain this scoring btw.

 

I don't know why either, he's one of the most technically proficient fighter in boxing right now. While he had a few disappointing fights excitement wise, he's normally a pretty entertaining fighter too in the sense that he doesn't avoid contacts and looks to hurt his opponent. It is really a mystery to me.
