I disagree. The fight was close, just because Vargas was being hyped and Winky for the first time really made a name for himself doesn't mean Winky deserved the victory. Going into the championship rds of a very close fight it was Vargas, not Winky who clearly showed that he dug down deep and went into another gear. This dispite the fact that Vargas clearly seemed to be having an off night.

I defy anyone to show me six rounds that Vargas won, let alone seven.

I think this is one of those fights that develops a life of it's own...I bet there's people on line who chalk it up to Wright and haven't even watched the fight.

Frankly, I thought it was closer than Mayorga-Forrest II (which I had Forrest winning clearly).

To be quite honest, I haven't watched that fight since that first night it was shown several years ago. I also have no desire to see it again as it was not that good, if memory serves me correct. I would watch it again if I had it though, just to rejudge who won it.

I swear when I get back home from my deployment I'm going to rewatch all the close fights that everyone argues about. Oscar-Whitaker, Oscar-Quartey, Pac-JMM, just to name a few.

Regardless, I know you don't believe that 37 year old Mosley is a better opponent than Forrest when Mayo fought him.

I think it was from a brawling sense, but I just remember not liking it that much. In fact I'm almost certain I didn't record it, so I don't think I'll get to rewatch it.

Yup. Vernon Forrest is Ken Norton to Shane's Ali. No, please nobody get excited. I'm not saying Shane is as great as Ali. But Shane will be remembered as a better/greater fighter than Forrest, despite the fact Vernon had his number.

I agree! I laugh when people cry robbery for Winky. It was a close fight but no clear winner.

The first words out of Vargas mouth are "Mexican this" "Mexican that"

The first words our of Mayorga's mouth are not about Nicaraguan Pride.

Mayorga talks shit to talk up a fight, and is immediately friendly and cordial with his opponents after. He doesn't really hate anyone, he just is a good salesman.

Vargas is a piece of shit in and out of the ring. Any dickhead repping his toughness by talking up Oxnard is a fucking faggot.

He's a degenerate who doesn't know the first thing about tough. Mayorga grew up in a sewer and has made something better out of himself. He has my respect, Vargas and his nonsense, does not.

Vargas was very good, too bad he collided with the career-killer Mr. Trinidad himself...

Exactly. I've seen that fight 3 or 4 times and cannot see how Vargas won the fight. That is the fight that made me a fan of Winky.

Now post your score card for Winky vs Vargas.

Wish I could. I only saw the fight that one time and didn't score it. I just remember thinking Vargas pulled it out because Winky obviously faded the last 2 or 3 rds.

Vargas had the better carreer as far as being more talented, better promoted, and was just a better fighter.

However Mayorga has 2 wins over Forrest which is better than anything Vargas acomplished.

you can argue the Winky win even though is controversial. But even if VArgas won clearly, Winky wasn't at his very best at the time.

:nono: Ahaaaaaa!!!! Same criteria for bitter Hopkins groupies, to carefully select Winky fighting against a drastically undersized mismandatory, and pawn that mismatch off as the peak power over contemporary fighters no matter what.

Vargas was the better fighter, but i disagree he was more talented. Most of Mayorga's success was due to his talent, in his prime he had very good handspeed, power, stamina, and his chin - while not exactly granite - was still much better than Vargas' chin. He just lacked any kind of skill.

Vargas and Mayorga are seperated in skill but in reality, both ended up the same way. Both talked alot of crap before their fights and in their biggest fights ended up on their backs, apologizing.

I almost want to give the advantage to Mayorga...at least he can say he was an undisputed champ...something Vargas can never say.

I remember HBO pushing hard for Reid v Vargas.....but Reid ended up losing his contract with them and instead, was fighting on FX

He was partially unified, not undisputed, because he lost to Spinks.

Which begs several questions in this thread.

I'm not sure how Reid vs Vargas was relevant...Trinidad-Vargas was a unification match because Trinidad picked up Reid's belt. Reid only had one belt.

So whether Vargas fought Reid or not is immaterial...it was a unification match just like the Trinidad fight. Plus, Castillejo was the WBC champ and he had that title on ice waiting for thye DLH fight in early 2001.

I guess I'm foggy on the details of HBO pushing hard for Vargas-Reid considering Reid only had 14 or 15 fights when he lost to Trinidad.

Huh? It was relelvant because they both came from the 96 squad, they both fought in the same division, both held belts and were both undefeated.

I don't recall it going down like that. Seems outside of HBO's gameplan to pit two young champions with under 20 fights against each other.

Against the great featherweight, Kevin Kelly.

It was talked about fight when they were both undefeated champs.
