I don't particularly like digging up old threads, but I'm doing it in this case because the phrase - and praise - Lampley used during Pavlik-Lockett just really stood out...then and now.

Who is the current "centerpiece" of US boxing? Hopkins/ De La Hoya?

Who is the future of US boxing? Dawson? Williams?

How much will it take for Pavlik to even approach this status - if he ever had it - after the loss to Hopkins?

If he goes back and controls 160 and 168, will it be enough? There's not a lot of talent in either division, especially when you start eliminating the non-US based fighters.

Maybe he thinks that the other American fighters like Hopkins, Mosley, and De La Hoya are unamerican or Muslims....

to mE, it means who would the USA put to battle in not only a p4p sense against the rest of the world, but also in personality, charisma, and ability to generate positive press.

In other words, the Miss USA of boxing.

Pavlik is still the pick, I'd say.

Past guys would probably include Tyson and dlh, and maybe Floyd and Roy.

I think it was more about what American fighter(s) would become the star(s) HBO has been looking to push as the current crop (which includes the GBP crowd) inevitably gets closer to retirement.

Nah it's because Pavlik is white and racist Lampley can only see White fighters as Americans!

Just kidding of course. Pavlik was the only young undefeated American champion, in most P4P lists..who could be a superstar....as you said.

    Simple as that.
