NEW YORK (Oct. 21, 2008) – Lucian Bute’s popularity in Canada has quickly reached Gretzky-like proportions with the International Boxing Federation (IBF) super middleweight champion ready to defend his title once again in Montreal on Friday, Oct. 24, in a special championship fight on ShoBox: The New Generation.

Never seen Bute fight, Andrade is solid if nothing else. Looking forward to seeing Bute for the first time and hoping this will be a good fight.

I found this line kind of funny.

He continued: “For the past few years, the super middleweight division has been all about Joe Calzaghe and then Mikkel Kessler.

How is it "all about" Kessler now? Does he have any more claim to being the man than anyone else? He just lost his belt to Calzaghe and hasn't done anything since. I've never seen a guy get so much praise for being at best the second best guy in his division. How he does against the rest of the best at 168 remains to be seen.

I like Lu! Work with him all the time. He is well mannered and soft spoken. Treats you like family as soon as he meets you. His ring generalship is a thing of beauty and out of the ring very bright as well as humble. He learned to speak French in a year after moving to Montreal. Kind of hard when your tainers and promotion speak French and very lil English; also he was just ship from Romania. Very hard worker. When he won the IBF Title his tears of joy is what it's all about. I told him good things happen to good people!

I don't know if you were aware of that but he unified 2 belts before losing to Calzaghe and is currently the WBA champ.

Most people in Canada have never heard of Bute. Perhaps in Quebec he's know a little bit better, but "Gretzky like" fame is beyond ridiculous. :notallthere:

They may as well have just handed the belt back to him after Calzaghe vacated. I guess 168 is just garbage.

He won it against Dimitri Sartison. Honestly, I don't understand your dislike for Kessler. The guy nearly cleaned out 168, he pretty much forced Calzaghe into a fight. He beat, among others, Manny Siaca, Anthony Mundine, Librado Andrade and Markus Beyer. That's not a murderers row, but that's a pretty solid resume at 168.

Is he more popular than Davey Hilton at least?

I like Kessler actually. He's solid for sure, how good he is I don't know. Id like to find out though.

At least, you know he's good enough to partly unify 168, for what it's worth...

Right now : yes. Just before Hilton went to jail, probably not. Hilton is a pretty big name here, people like him or despise him, but he leaves no one indifferent. Davey Hilton is Quebec's biggest waste of talent (boxing wise of course).

Perhaps it's solid, but until it has Edison Miranda's name on it, it will always be lacking.

For sure. As it is now I don't see anyone that's going to beat him at 168. I've yet to see Bute though, so maybe there could be someone. I guess I'm just bitter because 168 sucks right now. At least we have Lacy and Taylor.

He would be like the 4th best guy on Kessler's resume. I know you're joking and all but it's true.

Ignoring knowledge and indulging in echolocation.
Is Bernard's father a bad thing?... :nono: I know that yes,..Jermaine isn't the only guy to have whupped Hopkins arse,.. but he is the only one to have done it twice to my knowledge,... which hurts, it does hurt because,.. when people say "if only Hopkins had of fought the way he fought against a midget mismandatory he would have beaten fighter A",.. .. there was all the motivation in the world to dominate the rematch,....

    ....he lost..

No one knows who Bute is. Gretzky-like.

That's like saying Sharmba Mitchell experienced Jordan-like fame.

Yeah, Bute's popularity is "off the charts".

That's because the chart manufacturers don't yet have the technology to make charts that small.

You'd know who he was if you lived in Canada. His face is printed on all our money and their are 6 national holidays in his honor.

I wouldn't be typing if I lived in Canada, because I'd be so important, I'd have my own army of little typists doing that for me.
