I cancelled the Spanish package a few months back...no biggie. This series was good about showing up and coming prospects but that was about it. Sadly, I'd venture to guess that FNF won't increase it's budget and if it does it'll marginally improve the product.
They should tape solo boxeo from a studio, or have a permanent stadium to shoot it, like TNA wrestling do.
:crying: Damn! SOLO BOXEO was sort of the home of puertorican vs mexican bouts; the place where you could follow then prospects Juan Manuel Lopez, Israel Vazquez, etc. They were televising every bout of rising prospect Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. among others. This is truly a tragedy!
Solo Boxeo is a terrific program, and seldom do you see a boring fight on there. Too bad as I like it far better than FNF.
Solo Boxeo Actually Brings NATIONALLY TELEVISED Fightcards to the Dallas/Ft. Worth Area, so REED is ESPECIALLY SAD to Hear this News... REED:flip:
I agree with you that it had surpassed FNF. I've watched many more Solo Boxeo shows over the past several years.
I hated when I heard this news, but you can thank/blame Top Rank and Golden Boy. What was once a great series became crippled by their ridiculously soft matchmaking and Telefutura's failure to implement their one-time moderate standards. Still, agREED with others in that I enjoy this series far more than FNF (though ESPN2 hosted more than a few damn good fights/upsets this year). HOPEFULLY, the lack of outlets remaining in the states will force those still in business to tighten up standards, rather than continuing to bid against itself.
I think you can blame George Bush and this fiscal mess as well. Just finished watching Villa-Mtagwa. Another fight of the year candidate. They usually have 10-20 fights a year that could qualify for that if the fighters were anyone of note. Really huge blow to boxing, particularly to the Spanish viewers who this sport cannot afford to lose - now and future generations.
I read that yesterday (specifically the part you underlined and bolded) and wondered if it meant more cards on Azteca America, or "just" limited to TV Azteca (the non-US feed). Tuto Zabala seems to have a stranglehold on Telemundo's boxing scheduled, unless they're willing to expand beyond once a month.
Hopefully there's an increase on Telemundo. I doubt Azteca has the same reach...it certainly doesn't have very good picture quality (on my TV, at least).
It seems that it would be ridiculously easy to throw an English feed on these shows and simulcast between a Spanish channel and an English one like Vs or Spike or just have English (or Spanish) audio available for the other audience. There aren't very many people, including boxing fans, who will watch a show that isn't in a language they can understand. And almost no one who prefers it that way. And adding a guy or two (or 5) to the cost of production, can't be that much when it is spread between 2 channels or by the additional viewers.
Excellent news. I hate Bob in some ways "Hey everybody, boxing is big in Mexico so I'm going to promote Mexican fighters. See, there is a rivalry between Mexicans and Cubans so I'm going to try to match up Mexican boxers and Cuban boxers. But there are a lot of Jews in New York, so in New York I try to find Jewish fighters." but you gotta like the old bastard for promoting so damn many cards and not giving up on the sport.
There was a time that Univision(parent of telefutura) was a great boxing channel. When they started the newer network Telefutura, Univision quit showing boxing, sending it to Telefutura to attract new viewers(Much like ESPN did with ESPN2). Now that Telefutura is dumping boxing fans, hopefully Univision will resume boxing programing. Either way I will never have a reason to have Telefutura on my tv again. Hell, I wouldn't let USA network be on in my house when they cancelled the TNF series for ten years!
hopefully azteca america has a more clear feed and a better idea how to manage fights over a 2 hour period than tv azteca.
Was Soto-Lorenzo II on TV Azteca or Azteca America? I thought the first one was exclusive to Mexico. Whichever one it was, they did a terrible job w/ that fight. There were times where they'd pick up the feed midway through a round!
The main event was shown where I live...for about 3-4 rounds. They don't really tailor the shows for television, becuase I seem to remember a couple other shows that had long undercard fights that extended the card well past the television time alottment.
