Early in the fight, in a round Calzaghe was winning, Kellerman proudly proclaims

"Jones is making Calzaghe look like a washed up Trinidad":lol:

Holy fuck. He literally couldn't have been any more wrong.

I hate Kellerman with a passion, the guy is a fucking donut.

Kellerman plays favorites. Everybody knows it. He doesn't even try to be impartial.

Well he probably should, seeing as he is a professional broadcaster/journalist/commentator. He is a useless nerd.

Well, there's a reason why some didn't want him on HBO.

But if HBO has no problem with it, then perhaps he doesn't need to do anything differently.

yeah, made the same point in another thread...but it is worthy of reiteration...i'm sure he'll feel pretty stupid about it when he reviews his own work and hopefully he won't make such idiotic conclusions on the basis of one or two punches

If REED Isn't Mistaken, Kellerman Said that EARLY N round 2...

@ that Juncture, he WASN'T Faaaaaaaar Off, Either...Roy had just BADLY HURT Joe N Round 1 & Calzaghe Still HADN'T Made his Way BACK Into the Fight OR Asserted his Dominance...

Looking @ the ENTIRETY of the Fight, Sure, Max's Comment was DUMB, but @ the MOMENT he Said it, it WASN'T Exactly INappropriate...

He said it in round 2 and in that round, Roy only landed one significant punch. And that was towards the end of the round. Joe was outworking him and out landing him. He also was tearing jones' body up.

Well, StewarD does have an uncanny ability to predict how a fights going to unfold.

The brilliance is in his delivery, though.

He usually he starts off with something astute like "I could see this going either way".

Then, as a fight starts to go either of those ways, he's able to pick up on in it before anybody else and then relay that to the unwitting viewer at home.

When a fight nears its conclusion, Steward brings it home with some variation of the "it's just like I thought" line, and before the viewer knows it, they've basially been told the ending of the movie long before it's appeared on screen.

I didn't watch the fight last night...but during those next 10 rounds, did Kellerman ever change it up and say "Calzaghe is making Jones look like a washed up Trinidad"?

    Just curious.

    REED's Point STILL Stands...

Roy had just BADLY DROPPED Calzaghe a Round Prior & was Landing the CRISPER Blows to that Stage of the Fight...

It was VERY SIMILAR to Roy's Best Moments of the Fight Against the "Washed Up Trinidad"...Trinidad was THROWING More than Roy & Roy GAVE Tito his Body, just like he Did w/Calzaghe...

Again, Max's Comments were EVENTUALLY Proven to B SILLY, but @ The MOMENT he Said it, it was ACCURATE...

This Reminds REED of Merchant's Commentary During Hamed-Kelley...Fresh Off of his 2nd Knockdown, Merchant Said,"Hamed was Billed as a Big PUNCHER, but we've Seen NO Evidence of that.", or Words to that Effect...

BOOM!!!....Literally, the MOMENT Merchant Completed his Sentence, Hamed DROPPED Kelley w/a Shot...

As SILLY as Merchant's Comment Ended Up Being, He WAS ACCURATE @ the Very Instant he Uttered it....

The thing is, it seemed silly to me, because as Anthony said, Jones only landed one significant punch in the whole round, and I don't think he'd even landed it at that point

Otherwise I would not have thought it was stupid at the time.

By the time he said it, Calzaghe wasn't completely into his stride, but he was finding his rhythm and range, he was outworking Jones and landing clean bodyshots, moving around a lot, and not getting hit in return (ie completely different to tito plodding around getting tagged clean).

At the exact moment he said it, I immediately thought "er... what?". It didn't seem stupid to me in retrospect, it was stupid the second he said it.

OBVIOUSLY, Kellerman was Taking Round 1 into CONSIDERATION...

& While Calzaghe OUTWORKED Roy N Round 2, it's NOT like that Round COULDN'T have Been Scored for Roy, Based on the Sheer SUBJECTIVITY of Round by Round Scoring...WHO Landed the CLEANEST, Most EFFECTIVE Punch('s) of Round 2???....Roy Jones...

Put it THIS Way, if U Showed a NON Boxing Fan the 1st 2 Rounds of Jones-Calzaghe & THEN Showed them Roy's BEST Moments of the Tito Fight, the Footage would B COMPARABLE...

REED Understands WHY U Didn't Like what Max Said, but it WASN'T Like he was Waaaaaaaaaay OFFBASE, @ the Time that he Said it...

    It was a bullshit line.

If I'd never heard Kellerman before, it would be easier to believe what you're saying, but Kellerman has a history of playing favorites during fights.

And I don't think this is what he meant by saing it "Trinidad was THROWING More than Roy & Roy GAVE Tito his Body, just like he Did w/Calzaghe".

When you compare someone to a "washed up" fighter, it has connotations.

U Say this as if Larry Merchant DOESN'T have a 20+ Year CATALOG of "Bullshit Lines"...

& MOST of the Time, Merchant PURPOSELY Made the Connotation TRANSPARENT...

    EVERY Commentator Plays Favorites...

Yeah, and I've been critical of Merchant on here. I'm sure you've been equally as critical of Kellerman.

Regardless, Kellerman tried to get away with a very stupid line - something which wasn't even true by that point of the second round - and maybe he figured that punch - which Jones landed right before he said it - was the last time he'd be able to say it in the fight.

Playing favourites is different though. If he was rooting for Jones, good for him, but wanting Jones to win is different from saying stupid things that make no sense at all.

And personally, I thought it was pretty sad to see Roy beaten up like that. IMO worse than his KO losses, just to be dominated round after round like that. He also took more punishment, despite not being particularly hurt at any stage.

The simple solution is to turn off the volume on the tv and put in some good music, you will enjoy the fight a lot more as you will pay more attention to it and notice more things going on in there as you woin't be so distracted.

When you go to fights in person you don't hear any silly commentary and you enjoy it much more, so why would you want to watch a fight with someone talking nonsense on it?

I sometimes do that, especially if it's a fight where I want to keep a scorecard...and I'll go back and watch it with sound...but I don't like doing it all the time.

The ideal for me would simply be to just have mics opened up around the ring and corners and just let everything speak for itself...with commentators only doing the pre/post fight commentary/interviews.

I like to hear the sounds of the fight, it's just not the same without it.

I like to hear the sounds of the punches, the crowd, the cornermen talking etc. It all adds to the experience. I even like to hear commentators as long as they're not talking absolute shit.

The sport needs to do away with these old men trying to hang on for paydays like Jones and Holyfield. We need new young athletes. HUNGRY athletes preferably. I'm not seeing a positive outlook on the future of the sport.

REED likes to HEAR the Comnmentators (REED CAN'T STAND Complete SILENCE), but it's RARE that REED Actually ABSORBS what they Say, Initially...

It's Not Until REED REWATCHES a Fight a Time or 2 that he Begins to Pick Up on SPECIFICS of the Commentary....

It's similar for me. Just the commentators voices talking, not even what they are saying specifically, adds to the experience. I can't stand silence either, in fact it amazes me people wanting to watch a fight completely on mute, not hearing the punches, or the crowd or anything.

It might be different for guys that have been to loads of fights live, but seeing as I've seen most of mine on the box, it's something that's familiar to me, and all part of watching a fight.

I also quite liked the old school broadcasts with just 1 commentator. Still a commentary, but with moments of just fight sounds and no talking. So I agree with you there Mitchell, I wouldn't mind fewer commentators. Or even just the same amount, but without Kellerman ;)

At HBO do they have a piece of paper saying that Joe was knocked down against Eubank?

Kellerman stated that after the Nard knockdown, and Lampley stated the exact same thing last night. Pretty stupid. Anyone who's seen the fight would remember clearly that Joe knocked Eubank down in the first, and was not knocked down himself.
