This is for stupid people like Double L who think that Roy showed no heart and "quit" against Calzaghe. Roy was bleeding and outgunned but never stopped trying in his fight against a top 3 P4P fighter in his own weight class. De La Hoya showed what no heart is and how to quit against a much smaller Pacquaio.
BS. Yeah Roy fought to the end but he didnt take anything close to the beating Dela took. They both IMO gave everything they had 100% of 0.
I wouldn't claim either of those. Jones tried more but did not go for an all-out attack at any stage, instead he kept backing away and settled for a loss. Oscar became gun-shy more quickly and started to look for a way out. Quitting in your last fight is not that big of a deal. Morales did it against Pac, Arguello did it against Pryor etc. In his prime Oscar proved his heart many times. Jones didn't have to, so they can't really be compared here. Furthermore, I don't see why they should be compared all the time anyway
Did Mike Tyson quit against Lewis as he proceeded to get thrashed after the second round? He didn't look like he was trying, just getting beaten up round after round the way DLH was against Pacman.
Roy didn't take the beating that DLH took? That's not even arguable. Roy took around a 100 punches more and from a much bigger opponent. Roy was battered and bleeding and didn't look for a way to get out of the fight.
You gauge Roy's performance based on a little bit of blood dripping from his eye and that has you thoroughly convinced.:: Come on! Roy gave up by the 3rd round. And he didn't show any kind of desperation at any point nor make an effort to win. But at least he tried a little bit harder than that absolutely disgraceful act he pulled in Tarver III. Roy should've been shot dead for what he did that night. He RIPPED OFF EVERYBODY! The fact he even got another ppv date for the Calzaghe fight was ridiculous.
Extremely poor analogy. In both cases, they'd been KO'd in the first match and after giving their all in the rematch both realized they couldn't win and gave up.
I really don't think Hoya quit fighting. I don't think he could fight. You could easily see he couldn't pull the trigger and that fighting at 147lbs drained all of his energy. He had zero in that fight. Pacquiao took advantage of it. Good for him. Cupey
DLH was more like Jones vs Johnson in there.....Jones put up more of a fight vs Calzaghe because he had a little more in the tank than he did vs Johnson and Oscar did at the weekend
Sometimes fighters simply won't fall down. It doesn't make the beating they're taking - or how hopeless/impossible turning the fight around is - any less credible. If he would have tried falling down - he would have been criticized for 'taking a dive.' If he would have taken a knee - he would have been criticized for quitting or also taking a dive. DLH knew he didn't have it. I mean, the last two rounds he barely threw a punch. He simply COULD NOT execute. And when he tried, it was armpunching, and off-balance, and slow. Manny had him. Period.
No. My words were: "Sometimes fighters simply won't fall down. It doesn't make the beating they're taking - or how hopeless/impossible turning the fight around is - any less credible." I.E. - saying a fighter was taking LESS of a beating b/c "didn't go out on his shield" vs. one who did (either b/c he quit on his stool or took a knee) is erroneous. There are many other factors. It's looking at it from the flipside. It's good to see you, 'Tapper. Now go away. ::
barely. I would have more respect for fighter in Roys position going out in the 7th and giving it everything, not succeeding and quitting on his stool than not even trying to win like Roy did against Calzaghe & Tarver III.
phonetap isn't getting into this oscar vs roy argument....because it's not a debate you can win. YES, you can attack roy for not doing everything in tarver III & calzaghe although (in phonetap's estimation) against joe, roy didn't have anything left to give. phonetap believes, oscar would have been better off answering the next round taking the beating and having his corner throw in the towel....it would have taken the quitting issue off the table.
Roy finished the fight, because Calzaghe allowed him to. Calzaghe was more concerned about clowning Roy then finishing a mismatch in style. Pacquiao was more concerned with winning the fight in impressive fashion. Roy is just as shot as DLH. In his own mind the Jones win solidified Calzaghe as an all-time great, when it was nothing, but a crap fight, and Joe couldn´t even finish it in style. So please enough of these bravery BS. Nobody would have blamed Roy, if his corner stopped the fight. Few still stick to the going out on your shield bullcrap.
Roy's corner knew that he wouldn't quit, so they didn't bring it up. Oscar's corner did because they knew he would.
Good god:doh: That being said, I hardly ever blame fighters for quitting and I surely don't blame Oscar (nor Roy) in their latest fights
