This isn't an election, but early returns look promising for Saturday night's showdown between Oscar De La Hoya and Manny Pacquiao (HBO Pay-Per-View, 9 p.m. ET).
Based on early reports from cable companies and DirecTV and Dish Network, the scheduled 12-round welterweight bout could get as many as two million buys, according to Bob Arum, chairman of Top Rank, Inc., the event's co-promoter, said Thursday.
When De La Hoya fought Floyd Mayweather last year, that fight did 2.4 million buys. Buys for this weekend's fight in California are tracking at 90% of what estimates showed for De La Hoya-Mayweather.

"Will that hold for the country? It's like an election. Who the hell knows?" Arum said. "But we know based on those early numbers and based on experience the event will perform extremely well. If I had to guess, anywhere between 1.6 million and two million homes, which is a home run."
Such projections are surprising because of how poorly the last two HBO PPV shows did. The Oct. 18 matchup with Bernard Hopkins vs. Kelly Pavlik as well as the Nov. 8 meeting between Roy Jones and Joe Calzaghe did less than 250,000 buys.

The last time De La Hoya didn't reach that threshold in his 18 appearances on pay TV, he was just five years into his career. The fewest buys he's ever generated was 220,000, when he was a lightweight, in 1995.
"People wanted to see him fight, and still want to see him fight. Once De La Hoya is in a fight, all the media come together and treat it as a major event," said Arum, who helped build De La Hoya into an attraction before the fighter left to start his own company, Golden Boy Promotions.
"ESPN does round-the-clock coverage. They don't do that for regular fights. Women become interested. Women generally aren't interested at all... Oscar broadens the universe. He brings in people in a similar way Mike Tyson brought people in. De La Hoya does it in a different way and reaches different demographic groups. He's the one guy in boxing who reaches out to Anglo women. That, to me, is unbelievable. We worked on it, but to see it come to this kind of fruition is something I never would've expected."

 

Wow! Good hype job by HBO yet again. This fight was a farce that turned into a splendid event. I wouldn't have paid for it. Although if I had an inkling that Pacquiao would've ended DLH's career, maybe I would've. I was expecting DLH to win easily.

 

I'd feel better if someone other than Arum was quoted on the subject.

Correct answer: Less than 200,000.

"Pavlik-Taylor (rematch) is tracking very well."
Final outcome: 150,000 or so buys.

"We're still tallying up the receipts for Pacquiao-Morales (rubber match), but don't be surprised if it's well over 400,000. It was certainly the best of the trilogy."
Final outcome: 350,000 buys, slightly less than the second fight.

"Cotto-Mosley is already over 400,000 buys."

Exactly. I was going to say the same thing. Arum knows how to float a big number early.

My guess is they spent a lot more advertising this one.

I know in some areas there were deals for the ppv...like giving it away for free for people who switched (can't remember if it was cable or direct tv) and some companies had rebates.

Still, if the number holds - and 1.6 to 2 million is a pretty wide gap - near these then that's pretty good.

I was hoping for three of four millions buys...wanted as many people as possible to witness that ass kicking.

 

Well usually in mexican and indian households, there's on average 6-12 people living in 1 house. So there were probably near a billion people who saw it altogether.

Still a great number, but my guess is either right at or slightly below expectations.

 

I think more people thought that it would be a mismatch for Oscar than they anticipated.

 

the fact that it did half as many buys as mayweather jr's fight with delahoya doesn't seem to bode all that well for pacquaio as far as negotiating leverage with mayweather jr is concerned

 

What will be more telling is how well a Pacquiao-Hatton fight will do at the box office. There was far more positive buzz going into World Awaits than for this event, not to mention that Oscar was coming off of the Mayorga knockout (sort of). Whereas in this fight, he was coming off of the Floyd loss in that garnered little enterainment value, and the Forbes win in a fight even casual fans recognized as a $10 million sparring session.

 

Mayweather-Hatton did 900,000 buys in the U.S. while doing 1.4 million in the U.K. I'd chalk that up to Hatton's influence more than Floyd's.

Something to remember...

After DLH-Mayweather most who saw the fight were disappointed. Where I watched the fight, those who knew little or didn't know Manny at all were amazed.

People who know nothing about boxing and don't even follow it were getting friends together to order the fight, both in circles of mine and my brother's. This is disappointing to me, although im sure overseas numbers were large also.

 

With the overseas numbers, this will surpass 2,000,000 easy. The best part about it is Pacquiao owns the Philippine rights to the fight. Man Pac is going to get paid out the ass. ::

Pacquiao has had a TV deal with Solar Sports since he fought Barrera the 2nd time. Golden Boy is uninvolved with any negotiations there.

With Manny's guarenteed $11,000,000, and the revenue from his Philippine TV rights, he could make upward of $20,000,000+ from this fight alone. Ridiculous amount of money for Pacquiao. Along with his San Miguel, and Nike advertising contracts he renewed this year, Pacquiao is going to be helping a lot of poor Filipinos. ray:

where do you get those numbers? espn reports it all as domestic revenue, 1.25 mill buys, $70 million in domestic television revenue for DLH-Pac; 2.4 million buys and $134 million in revenue for DLH-Floyd

 

HBO initially announced 850,000 in the U.S. for PBF-Hatton and adjusted up. Sky initiaally reported 1.2 million buys in the U.K. and adjusted up. Ask Jakeypoo...his site reported the numbers last year.

 

Yeah, you simply don't know much about revenue streams.

 

Muzse was talking about Mayweather-Hatton PPV numbers, hence the Hatton-influence remark. Not sure what influence Hatton would have on DLH-Pac, that would make you think he's referring to this fight.
