From my collection of old El Nuevo Dia newspaper, some rare photos of Wilfredo Gomez and Salvador Sanchez.
Great stuff Panchy. It's so easy to forget about it while posting online and reading online news every day but back then, scrap booking and magazine collecting was the only way to archive stuff. It is still the best way to do so too!
Two great fighters in the greatest era ever of boxing. I followed them intently when they were fighting though, and never missed a bout of theirs, sometimes driving an hour to my Uncle's house to catch Gomez fighting on a weeknight at MSG as cable tv was in its infancy then and not many households had it. Had he lived, Sanchez would have been defeated by Arguello IMO.
I had the same opinion. Even Arguello himself responded to Sanchez calling him out challenges with a "Is this kid crazy?" But then, Sanchez made me eat my words more than once, so maybe he could had a chance to beat Alexis after all. We'll never know.
More but from the fight itself. Weight-in. Notice Gomez trying to hide his belly while Sanchez looks very confident. First round knockdown
one of the things that made Sanchez so great was the way he put his whole body into his punches. When he wanted to punch his opponent really hard, watch the way he uses his whole body, from head to toe to generate power. One of the more beautiful punches I've seen him throw was the straight right hand to Nelson's body in the final round. I really think it was this shot that allowed Sanchez to finish Nelson off.
