What? You realize boxing matches are 12 rounds right? :notallthere: Margarito was ahead when the fight was stopped because he wore Cotto down and was beating his ass yet somehow Cotto is magically going to outbox Margarito for 12 rounds in a shutout?
3. If/When Margarito Does this, it's NOT Nearly as CALCULATED as U're Making it Seem...Andre Dirrell "Switches on a Dime" as Well...R U Gonna PRAISE HIM N your Next Post???.... When Andre Direll starts throwing upper-cuts with his back hand, and landing them, while he moves forward, and faces the level of competition that Margarito has, I will praise him for sure. 5. MOST Fighters Follow Up Right Hands w/Left Hands or Vice Versa...VERY FEW Fighters EVER Double Up on a Particular Shot, when Throwing it...The Most BASIC, Most Frequently TAUGHT Punch Sequence is LEFT Jab, RIGHT Cross, LEFT Hook (or the Southpaw Equivalent of this Combination)...U Expect REED to PRAISE Margarito for Following Up his Right Hands w/Lefts???::.... You've not studied his technique though. He throws a weak right hand, almost like a jab with his back hand, setting up his left-hook. This is in no way typical or standard and has fooled many an opponent. 7. It's Called a SIZE ADVANTAGE...Funny How when he Fought Paul Williams, a Man HIS SIZE, the Amount of "Backing Up" DECREASED...Moreso, Margarito "Disarms" his Opponents Body Attack w/his ELBOWS...He Keeps them TUCKED Against his Torso... Margarito consistently backed Williams up. Watch the fight again if you don't remember. Oh, he keeps his elbows tucked against his torso? And in doing so, disarms his opponents' body attack? Wouldn't that qualify as defense? Defense that you claim he has none of? 8. MOST Volume Guys have VARIETY & Unpredictability on their Punches... Most guys haven't beaten Cintron twice, Cotto and Clottey. 9. SLOW Feints...But Against a Guy that can Consistently BEAT him to the Punch, All it Does it Get Margarito Hit even MORE, ala the Cotto Fight... Margarito took shots to the head but Cotto was so afraid of the incoming, and so unsure of their origin such that his defense was ineffective that he couldn't sit on his punches, and was constantly in a hurry to move away as a result. 13. This is Due to his BALLS & More Importantly, his CHIN...When U BELIEVE N your Whiskers, it Does WONDERS for your WILLINGNESS to Trade N the Face of an Opponent's Assault... This is a part of Margarito's game. And it's effective and not common among fighters of today. That makes him special. EVERYTHING about Margarito's Style CENTERS AROUND # 11 on your List...Antonio Margarito DOES NOT have Good Defense...N Fact, he has BELOW Average Defense...N Every Fight Against Ranked Guys, he Gets Hit FREQUENTLY...Clottey, Williams, Six Heads, Diaz, Cintron & Cotto ALL Connected Virtually @ Will w/FLUSH Shots... Based on this response, I see that I've failed to educate you and that you're still blinded by your narrow minded view of what constitutes a "skilled" fighter. Speaking of "Intellectual Deficits", YOU'VE Convinced YOURSELF that Margarito's SLOTH like Handspeed/Footwork & SPONGElike Defense is by DESIGN... Again, you're unable to detect Margarito's skills because of your narrow-minded understanding of what constitutes a skilled fighter. I'd hoped to open your eyes but I see that I've failed. Obviously, you're free to go on classifying Margarito as you see fit, but in my opinion, you're missing a lot of subtlties which for as avid a fan as you is unfortunate.
:notallthere: The "Back" Hand is the POWER Hand...WHEN Is an Uppercut Thrown w/Anything OTHER than the "Back" Hand???...When does ANYBODY Throw an Uppercut w/their FRONT Hand???... Of Course it's TYPICAL to Follow a Right Hand w/a LEFT...N Fact, it's ENCOURAGED...REED's ALREADY Explained the Most ELEMENTARY Punch Sequence to U...But Since Margarito FREQUENTLY Throws a Right Hand w/NATHAN On it, then Follows it w/a Left Hook, YOU Think it's By DESIGN???::... Williams Backed Up AT TIMES, but for the Most Part he STOOD his Ground & Fought Margarito IN THE POCKET...Sure, Margarito's a DIFFICULT Target to Hit N the BODY, but when U're ABSORBING HEAD SHOTS @ WILL, U're NOT a Good Defensive Fighter...REED Doesn't Know How YOU or Anybody Else Could even ATTEMPT to Classify Margarito as Another But a SUAR Defensive Fighter... Cotto Sat on MOST of his Punches N the Margarito Fight, he just Couldn't HURT Margarito...The PATTERN Of the Fight was Cotto Moving, PLANTING, FIRING, LANDING, then MOVING Again...He SAT on MOST of his Landed Shots, Dude... Having a GREAT Chin & Little to NO Head Movement Makes Margarito "Special"???...O.K... Again, SPARE REED your PSUEDO "Keen Eye" BULLSHIT, Doub...Margarito is a Tough, Ballsy, but Very BASIC Pressure Fighter...He's MORE than Willing to Take 2 or 3 of your BEST Shots to Land 1 of his Own...He Takes Waaaaaaaaaaaaaay Toooooooooo MANY Headshots to have his Defense PRAISED in ANY Regard & he's WILLING to Wade In or Thru his Opponents Assault Because he KNOWS his Chin is GREAT... There's VERY LITTLE "Science" Involved w/his Attack or Intent...It's More about his DETERMINATION & OUTMANNING his Opponent, so Please Cease & Desist w/this BULLSHIT about what's "Part of Margarito's Game", as if he's Actually BAITING his Opponents Into Something... REED:boohoo:
Marge is a force to be reckoned with at 147, but there is no skill, science, or subtley to Marge. He simply comes forward throwing punches, and because of his ability to takes punches, usually ends up landing more than his opponent, and wearing them down. He has an excellent chin, and excellent stamina/workrate to compliment it. Which results in a pretty effective fighter, but don't go pretending he's a 147 pound Marquez, he isn't. He is a basic pressure fighter that happens to be a big welterweight with an excellent chin and workrate.
Uh yeah, I´m sure that is all there is to it. A chin and stamina. Boxing is so simple. And if you can actually throw a proper punch you might eventually stop a world class fighter like Cotto instead of slapping them to death with the inside of your gloves. ::
Boxing isn't simple at all no, and it's sort of taken for granted that Marge can throw a punch, and knows his way around a boxing ring. But at world level, he stands out in only 2 areas, chin and stamina. How can you argue with that?
You're crazy !!! Upper-cuts are almost strictly thrown with the front hand you dim-wit. Do you watch boxing? In fact, fundamentally it's a stupid as hell thing to do to throw one with your back hand - just watch Holyfield/Douglas. Judah throws it with his power hand but he's a south-paw so it's a whole different story. Plus, after Margarito throws a right with his back hand he often turns southpaw on a dime and throws the upper from his power hand. There's exceptions. Of course. But generally, the upper-cut is reserved for the front hand. ODH. Trinidad. JMM. Castillo. These guys all throw their upper-cuts for the most part with the front hand. It's an under-handed left-hook essentially. Unless you're Tyson or Margarito, throwing an upper-cut with your power hand is asking for a left-hook counter. But. REED doesn't see these things. To REED, Margarito is just a toughman who somehow manageS to beat one elite fighter after another.
Because a chin and stamina don´t beat other fighters otherwise Marion Wilson and Reggie Strickland would have been world champions for ten years. Hitting other people wins fights. If a chin and stamina were enough Oktay Urkal would have beaten Miguel Cotto.
James Toney and Floyd both throw damn good uppercuts with their right hands. Not to mention, the uppercut Forrest dropped Mosley with was a right uppercut (if I'm not mistaken). It takes skill and timing to land that shot which is why the average fighter doesn't throw it often. What you're saying isn't entirely true.
How many elites has Margarito beaten????? :dunno: 1 - Cotto 2 - Cotto 3 - Cotto Williams beat him, Santos beat him clottey isn't elite When he beat Mosley he will beat a non-elite fighter. Mosley still have something, and it's his name. beating on the mayorgas and vargas (barely) will not keep your name on the top echeleons.
agreed on Toney. not so sure about PBF. but there's no doubt there's something special about the way Margarito delivers and follow-ups with his upper-cut. Particularly in light of how long his arms are. A perfect example is the one he nearly decapitated Santos with in their second fight, when Santos was nearly knocked out. And throwing it with the power hand is an exception to the rule, which flies in the face of REED's understanding - a perfect example of his inability to break things down. I never said it's unheard of. Or that fighters never do it. But like you said, it's a weapon for the wise. And yes, Forrest who squared up against Mosley after hurting him with the straight right, indeed dropped him with a right upper-cut.
i know i'm repeating myself but one of the things that makes Margarito so dangerous is his ability to throw combinations while moving forward. This makes it vert difficult to "out-box" him, as Cotto discovered, which is the usual recipe for defeating a tough and durable pressure fighter. I'd also point to Tony's fight with Lucian to illustrate that he "can" fight going backwards and can do so very effectively (by taking his opponent's ear off).
Double L....what do you want? You want us to say Margarito is one of the Greatest Welters ever? He isn't...you want us to say he could beat past Great Welterweights? He probably couldn't... Margarito is a HUGE Welter...with a great chin...and insane work rate..that is ALL>....
it's not so much what i want you to say. it's my objection to what you "do" say : "Margarito is a HUGE Welter...with a great chin...and insane work rate..that is ALL" complete B.S. and over-simplification.
No, Margarito doesn't illegally run from his opponents, he doesn't illegally turn his back to avoid incoming danger and he doesn't excessively clinch illegally,...... does that make him 'less skilled' than other popular favourites?.. Depends on the definition I guess,.. but,... just quietly,.. I think I can live without him implimenting those particular things, so can the sport... any Fraud groupie who admired his reign at 130, or any Hopkins groupie who admired his reign at middleweight, really has no ground to stand on crying "size!" it must be noted.
