yeah thats why i pick Gomez..at 122 Manny Pacquiao was still a 1 dimensional fighter at that weight...if he didn't get you with the straight left. he wouldn't get you at all... Plus Gomez was a monster at 122...
..... Gomez was unbeatable at 122, blah, blah, blah. Give me the more talented fighter, that wasn't Gomez.
:: Normally i hate the "but if it was @ such and such weight ..." argument as well. I think it applies in this case though. Pac was/is very talented, but not very polished as a super bantam. Gomez was great boxer-puncher with experience against better fighters (@ 122) and his own share of skills to go with it.
I think Gomez was a better fighter at 122 than Pac-Man was, and Gomez was INCREDIBLY dirty. It never gets talked about much, but I still remember Pacquiao looking terribly discouraged and maybe even a little intimidated by Agapito Sanchez's roughouse tactics in their fight at 122. I like Pac-Man and I think he has become truly remarkable over the last few years, but we are taking him as he was at 122. Let's look at what we have... a SCINTILLATING puncher, huge power, extremely fast left hand, seemed to have a very solid chin (still does) but he wasn't much of a boxer at that point and his right hand was underutilized... that was Pac-Man when he was 122 champ In Gomez, we have a guy who threw well with both hands, could be downright unhittable when he really felt the need to play defense, was a more seasoned pro compared to Pac-Man at the same juncture, and he was dirty and GOOD at it, seldom getting caught for his various elbows, butts and low blows. The only thing that gives me pause is that Wilfredo never had the greatest chin in the world, you could hurt him, but you had to get there first and that was no mean feat. I think Gomez's skills and his less-than-gracious approach to fouls would really rattle Pac-man here... barring one of those killer straight left hands turning the tide, I think Gomez beats a discouraged Pac-Man over the long haul. HOWEVER... if this was any higher like 126 or 130 where Pac-Man seemed to get stronger and more fully developed as a boxer, I think he would put Gomez away brutally within 9 or 10 rounds
