Antonio Margarito gets 1-year ban for illegal wraps

    <!--//Byline box//-->By Associated Press
    Wednesday, February 11, 2009 -

<!--//tool box end//--><!--//article and page numbers//-->Antonio Margarito’s boxing license was revoked for at least one year Tuesday by the California State Athletic Commission for the illegal wraps discovered on the former welterweight champion’s hands before his loss last month to Sugar Shane Mosley.
The commission’s decision effectively bans Margarito, a California-born fighter who lives in Mexico, from boxing in the U.S., since other states generally uphold such suspensions under federal law. Margarito’s trainer, Javier Capetillo, also lost his license for at least one year despite claiming he made an innocent mistake while wrapping Margarito’s hands.
The decision stunned and infuriated Top Rank promoter Bob Arum, who attended the hearing in Van Nuys. Arum, Capetillo and Margarito all insisted the boxer had no knowledge of the illegal nature of the wraps, which contained a plaster-like substance nestled tightly inside the usual tape on a fighter’s fists.
"It’s an absolute outrage," Arum told The Associated Press. "It’s something that I never thought would happen in the United States, where somebody who is totally and completely innocent, has no knowledge what happened, and didn’t do anything wrong, gets his license taken away because his trainer allegedly did something wrong. Everybody is blown away. It’s absolutely crazy."
A few minutes before Margarito (37-6, 27 KOs) entered the ring in Los Angeles on Jan. 24, officials discovered the plaster-like substance when Mosley’s trainer, Naazim Richardson, ordered Margarito’s hands to be unwrapped. A hardened substance like plaster can give a fighter heavier hands, putting extra power on his punches.
"The conduct of both Mr. Margarito and Mr. Capetillo was unacceptable and threatened the health and safety of another licensee," said Carrie Lopez, the director of the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs, which licenses fighters. "Today’s action shows that both the Department of Consumer Affairs and the California State Athletic Commission take the issue of boxer safety very seriously, and will move quickly when a licensee’s actions threaten the safety of others."
Mosley stopped Margarito in the ninth round of their bout at Staples Center to claim Margarito’s WBA welterweight title. The largely pro-Margarito crowd was the biggest in the arena’s history.
Arum said Capetillo "deserved what he got," but strenuously objected to Margarito’s punishment. Margarito and Capetillo must apply with the California commission for reinstatement before their licenses can be reinstated.
Margarito could challenge the ruling in the California courts, or he could apply to the Association of Boxing Commissions to get permission to fight in states other than California.
Keith Kizer, the executive director of the Nevada Athletic Commission, told the AP it’s too early to say whether such a strategy would allow Margarito to fight in Las Vegas in the next year. Kizer previously has said Nevada is likely to honor any ban from California.
Arum said it’s more likely Margarito’s next fight will be in Mexico, where several cities already had contacted him about hosting one of the nation’s most popular fighters despite his recent loss.
"There are legal remedies, but there are practical remedies that would keep him fighting," Arum said.
Arum doesn’t expect Margarito to be back in the ring until June at the earliest after absorbing ample punishment from Mosley, who won every round on many observers’ scorecards in an upset victory. The result was shocking to fans who watched Margarito’s punishment of previously undefeated Miguel Cotto last summer to win the WBA belt

Arum is just resentful that a lucrative rematch against Cotto went down the toilet. He mentioned June and Mexico...does he think Cotto will fight Margacheato in Mexico?:boohoo:

You shoulda just put this article in the other thread. I'm so sick of hearing about this fraud.

The LAST thing I'll say about Fraudarita is this. Its a catch 22 for him being allowed to fight in Mexico. Sure Mexico will let him fight, but if he does to Mexico and fight theres a good chance the Cali Comission will take that as disregard to thier ruling(which it is) and he might NEVER again be reinstated in the U.S.

Nobody will fight him in Mexico. What restrictions will there be? He could have rocks under his gloves.

Then don't read this one. This cheater needs to have a 1000 threads done to remind all of us forever what a horrible thing he did. I'll beat the dead horse until it turns to ground beef and then cook burgers with it for the cheater's nuthuggers to eat for a whole month! Besides the other thread is not about Arum, but about an old HBO Article.

Agreed. It would be wiser for Margarito to continue to plead his innocence and hope to get reinstated somewhere. Anywhere half assed "respectable" would be a start.

I think he's probably made enough in last couple of fights to wait out the year. (if that's the limit to his suspension)

If he fights in TJ to make a couple of dollars and entertain local fans he could fuck himself even worse.

That said i could really care less either way at this point.

It seems Arum is buying Capetillo's story... Or he's the one that thought about it first.

If there's anyone i feel bad for in this whole situation it's Bob Arum.

I hope he's doing well. I think he needs all our support through this tough time.

he feels a sense of injustice only cos all this means that his pockets won't be as fat as he thought and they hoped would be come the end of the year.....also, if he supported the commision's decision he'd risk upsetting the Margacheato camp and losing future earnings.....Margacheato is/was Arum's premier mexican cash-cow

.....to say that the fighter should be exempt from any punishment would be like letting off someone on roids because they had no idea what that needley thingy was that their coach kept putting in their arm

I'm interested in seeing Margarito not only going back to his roots from where he started out fighting, but also to the same mediocre scrub he used to be before loading his gloves. Some of those Tijuana taxi drivers with 20 loses on their records might just hand him his ass now.

In Tijuana he can load his handwraps and everyone will look the other way as long he brings a brutal bloody KO to that menacing looking Jalisco cab driver!

Well my immediate reaction alongside fellow posters is ofcourse, fuck Bob Arum, the glutonous jewish turd,.. but looking down the list,.. I see many Puerto Ricans, who will openly excuse rigged hands, if the fighter wears a Puerto Rican cape ofcourse,... [IMG] you know why you're all here you vultures and it aint for the good of the sport..

Your views have slowly gone from peculiar to patently cynical. You somehow classify fighters like they follow innate ethnic directives... Did Cotto wear bad hand wraps idiot? Well yeah Tito did so yeah hahahaha.

Arum being a Jewish turd has nothing to do with his sense of outrage also. He feels and may be right for all we know, that Margarito was an unwilling dupe. BUt hes a jew so he must just be protecting his Mexicali conspiracy cohort.... Aztecs and jews go way back eh kaulki?

Ya know many people of many races do not like to see boxers immanently try to harm another guy illegally.

Had Margarito's wraps been exposed after the fight with Mosely on the way to the hospital in a critical condition, Id have loved to have seen the greedy jewish turd bang his knife and fork on the table then. I completely disbelieve the notion that Margarito had no idea of the rock between the wrapping gauze, that cuts his knuckles as far back in fights as, who knows when??, but there's evidence to suggest that he's used 'the pads' before.

"Did Cotto wear bad hand wraps idiot? Well yeah Tito did so yeah hahahaha."

    [IMG] Ah, a 'sprout'.

Now Arum is acting like a real bitch talking about he's going to ban his company from going to California. That's the kind of thing corporations do to exercise power over those who make money off of them. Threaten to remove money from their pockets and watch as they start to look the other way or give lighter punishments the next time something like this happens to a Top Rank fighter.

Bob Arum is being very irresponsible and evil here, and he deserves to be severely vilified.

What you imply by your rants is sometimes disturbing Kauli. My point is hardly to laude Arum I hope that is understood.

I would refer to Neil's post regarding Margarito only to say that Mosley beat a live dog and fought well and we don't truly know what Margarito knows... we know it is disturbing what was found.

The commission has not been transparant about what they found Kauli... so its not about Puerto Ricans and Mexicans ok? its about eeybody withholding information.
