Bas Rutten was so hard on CroCop's jock back in Pride, it was weird.:dunno:
Like he was the greatest thing that ever walked into MMA.
As for Rutten himself, I never found him that impressive to be honest. He was being overpowered by Kevin Randleman at UFC 20 in one of the most boring fights in years where Randleman just sat on top of him and Bas couldn't really do sh*t. Bas would get raped in today's MMA. He'd be out the door with the other chumps like Randleman and Coleman and Kerr. Guys who couldn't evolve with the times.

Yeah, except that Urlacher gets paid more in a year for the NFL than what Rutten made in his whole career. Rutten's just outspoken and comedic. His actual level of skill as a fighter was pretty average. Did he ever stop a takedown even once?
He'd get treated like Ken Shamrock does if he fought today.

Who cares? He'd still beat up football players, wrestlers, basketball players. This is a needed mission field.

:dunno: Are you referring to Brock Lesnar, Kurt Angle, Bobby Lashley, etc who all have extensive real life amateur wrestling backgrounds?

Just never cared much for Bas Rutten. A guy who makes an instructional video on "How to win a Bar Fight" where the opponent is just sitting there and minding his own business.
Bas Rutten was way overrated. He's only popular because he's a loudmouth comedian.

The thing is, Urlacher competes in a sport much more difficult to excel at as opposed to MMA where a lot of 2 left foot bums like Tim Sylvia can become champions. Give Urlacher 2 years of MMA training and with his athletic abilities and strength to go with that, he'd probably f*ck Bas Rutten's 45 year old ass up. That's the thing about MMA. A lot of these guys coming from the bars training for 1-2 years and are competiting at the highest level of MMA. Tim Sylvia is your proof. The guy can't even walk straight without falling over.

Hanzy, you are starting to sound down right foolish. Don't get me wrong, I THINK I get your point, but the fact is Bas is way past his prime. In his prime, he was a bad mofo. The guy was world champion in pancrase, that is something no matter what era you are in. Yes, the sport has evolved past him, but all sports evolve. That doesn't make guys that dominated at any era any less important to that era. You may not like Bas, and that is cool, but the guy was a pioneer in the sport that is MMA.

I give him full credit for his achievements. But he needs to realize that his sport is such that big, untalented, uncoordinated oafs with no athletic ability like Tim Sylvia have come along and been dominant champions on the biggest stage. Bas Rutten shouldn't think to himself that one needs 20+ years of training to be a dominant champion in MMA. Look at what Brock Lesnar has already achieved after a year of training. He's now the UFC champion with 2 solid wins over 2 solid UFC competitors in Herring and Couture.:dunno:
In which other sport can you name that somebody can come almost off the street, put in a year's training and start dominating the division?
I'm saying Rutten deserves respect but if somebody like a world class athlete like Urlacher took a couple of years training, Rutten might be in the fight of his life.
Sorry man, it just rubs me the wrong way that a fat f*ck from a bar like Sylvia became a dominant champion not to mention Brock Lesnar put in a year's worth of MMA training and is now the UFC champion. I just figure the road to glory in professional sports would take a hell of a lot longer and be a lot tougher than that.

Why are you saying Lesnar just walked off the street? You already mentioned his extensive amateur wrestling pedigree, which is the best base for an mma fighter.

Tim Sylvia walked off the street and became a champion after 2 years. Lesnar is the exception but he too achieved great results after only 1 year of training and with a great wrestling base. But even still, should a man with just a wrestling base who had not competed in amateur for a good 6 years before starting training in MMA have won the UFC title in only his 3rd UFC fight?
I don't know.:dunno: For the sake of the integrity of MMA as a sport, I'd have liked to have seen some serious wars and setbacks before somebody like Sylvia or Lesnar could simply just rampage towards the title and win it the way they did, as soon as they did.

I get your points Hanzy, I think it has so much to do with the youth of the sport if you want to know. Being a HW has much to do with it as well. It is a shallow division, and not many actual athletes. You would never see it at any other division.

Hanzy, you should walk in to an MMA gym and become world champ in 2 years! If Lesnar falls on you, you can bench him off of you.

Well if Tim Sylvia became champ in 2 years, who knows what's possible? And Tim had never stepped foot into a gym of any kind his entire life. All he had was his size. And look at the job the Hughes camp did with him. :kidcool: Just imagine what they might do with a world class athlete like Urlacher if Urlacher went into MMA instead of the NFL, with his size and strength.
Bob Sapp's career was none too shabby for a slow as f*ck muscle bound dude.

What are you laugin' at Gatti? Ain't you the one sucking off every UFC event like you're Dana White? Hyping up every piece of sh*t UFC card like it's the best event in the world when all you get are a bunch of overrated tatooed clowns humping eachother for 3 rounds. That event 2 weeks ago was a piece of crap save GSP f*ckin' up Penn like a bitch! :bears: Wasn't worth the 30 bucks they charged.

Bob Sapp's career WAS shit. Most of his wins were either controversial or fixed. Besides, Your argument has been used in boxing as well as MMA for years. Tons of athletes have tried the transition and failed. If your argument was correct, boxing and MMA would be full of football players and basketball players who wanted to make a change. You are comparing apples to oranges bro.
