But Dunne's dramatic knockout of Cordoba at 2:59 of the 11th round was the end of a fabulous action fight that will be part of the fight-of-the-year discussion. It was just a tremendous battle with wild momentum swings, knockdowns galore (six in total) and plenty of blood and guts. Thank goodness for the Internet so anyone around the world could see the fight live on Irish network RTE's Web site. It was worth sitting at an office desk watching rather than being able to lounge on the couch in front of the TV.

Dunne, 29, of Ireland, gave the partisan crowd of about 9,000 a memorable victory in the first boxing event at Dublin's O2 Arena as he rallied from deep deficits on all three scorecards to roar back for the improbable win in the first world title bout in Ireland since then-bantamweight titlist Wayne McCullough defended his title in Dublin in 1996.

Cordoba, 24, of Panama, held only the WBA's ludicrous "regular" title since Celestino Caballero (whom Cordoba outpointed in a national title fight in 2004) unified belts in November and was "elevated" to a "super" titleholder last fall. The madness of the WBA, however, is not enough to spoil this great fight.

Dunne, who won his fourth in a row since a shocking first-round knockout loss to Kiko Martinez in Dublin in August 2007 -- a defeat that cost Dunne the European title -- dropped Cordoba with a huge left hook in the third round and nearly had him out. But the round ended before Dunne could finish him. Dunne suffered a bloody gash over his right eye in the fourth and Cordoba was cut over his right eye in the fifth.

Dunne tasted the canvas when he was knocked down hard twice in the fifth round and nearly stopped during the follow-up attack of what was becoming a brutal slugfest. By the 11th round, Cordoba appeared in control, but Dunne, out of nowhere, dropped him three times, including a tremendous left uppercut to finish him. Cordoba was down for several minutes and left on a stretcher to go to the hospital for observation. Even Dunne, the winner, needed oxygen after the fight just to make sure everything was OK.

If you call yourself a Fight Freak, do yourself a favor -- seek out a DVD of this explosive match or search the Internet for the video.

i didnt see this, did anyone else? apparently it was a pretty damn good fight to watch

I was there ringside! An excellent fight with an amazing atmosphere the best I have seen live.

Dunne really dug deep to claim the title...

Yeah it was a really great night of boxing at the new O2 in Dublin.

The under card was Andy Lee who was very lucky to get a decision.

We also had some of our Olympians taking part in amateur bouts and Katie Taylor world champion lightweight.

The two guys are pretty young and staying amateur for the 2012 games as is Katie Taylor in the hope that womens boxing gets the go ahead.

there was a fair bit of discussion about it on saturday.....it just all took place in the Vitali-Gomez thread

Very entertaining fight....Dunne surprised me....i've been a doubter for a long time, and i thought that the Kiko Martinez fight proved me right and that Dunne would gradually fade into the boxing wilderness

i haven't heard anything post fight on Cordoba's condition......is it safe to persume that no news is good news?

.....as a brit, i'm hoping that European champion Rendall Munroe gets a shot. A clash between Munroe and Dunne has been talked about for a while now - Munroe has beaten Martinez twice since Dunne was destroyed by the Spaniad. I like Rendall, one of my favourite domestic fighters (and strangely, i don't have too many)....and he'd have a decent chance against Bernard.

worth remembering that whilst this was for the WBA belt, once again we have a situation where the WBA have two belt holders......Caballero holds the 'super' version.

Yeah that is a ridiculous situation.

Munroe V Dunne would be a decent fight but Im not sure it will happen Munroe didn't do Dunne any favors - he was offered big money to come over to Dublin and defend his title (European) at the O2 and turned it down flat - said he wasn't interested in coming to Dublin.

Then a few weeks later he fought some journey man in Dublin :notallthere: at a much small venue.

yeah, i hope that is not the case.....Dunne is gonna have a tough time keeping hold of that belt....Munroe is a threat but by no means the most dangerous contender out there.....it's a good match

how much press has Dunne got over the weekend....lost amongst all the six nations celebrations?

Dunne always get a lot of press over here and it has been all over the papers/radio/tv but there is no doubt it would have been bigger if the 6 Nations was a week later.

Munroe would be a good fight for Dunne and a fight he could win, I dont think Randell has the power to trouble Bernard.

Always been a fan of Dunne. Great fight. Having said that, his chin will always be a liability. Probably the reason why I like watching him. weak chin + fun Style always makes for a good fight.

He still makes the same mistakes - he has a great style and is good to watch but that defence needs to be worked on even further..

Who do you guys think he should fight next ?? The pocket rocket is calling him out in the papers - Now I love Wayne Mc but this fight would be a no win situation for Dunne...
